GENEVA (Reuters) - There has been “limited” human-to-human transmission of a new coronavirus that has struck in China, mainly small clusters in families, but there is potential for wider spread, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday.

A Chinese woman has been quarantined in Thailand with a mystery strain, authorities said on Monday, the first time it has been detected outside China. In all, 41 cases of pneumonia - a symptom of the disease - have been reported in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, mainly through exposure at a seafood market.

Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, acting head of WHO’s emerging diseases unit, told a Geneva news briefing that the agency had given guidance to hospitals worldwide about infection control in case of spread, including by a “super-spreading” event in a health care setting. “This is something on our radar, it is possible, we need to prepare ourselves,” she said.

Amid risk of epidemic, WHO urges Thai hospitals to step up monitoring during Chinese New Year

The new Coronavirus 2019 could be transmitted from human to human with the danger of the epidemic spreading to other areas, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned on Wednesday (January 15).

The WHO has sent an alert to all hospitals worldwide to control the spread of the virus, as there is no medicine to treat the infection.

Richard Brown, WHO Representative to Thailand Centre, asked government agencies to closely monitor the situation, especially during Chinese New Year which starts from January 25, since there are many Chinese tourists going to Thailand.

There are currently 41 coronary cases in Wuhan, China, including one patient who died.

The medical community has discovered six human coronal viruses, four of which have a moderate impact on the respiratory system and two other two species -- severe acute respiratory syndrome and Middle East respiratory syndrome -- that can cause severe respiratory illnesses.

How about banning Chinese from traveling during Lunar New Year? A virus couldn't find a better opportunity to spread widely than that!

Thais (TAT) would smuggle them to Thailand. Don't want to lose visitors.

They couldn't even stop measles spreading, an entirely preventable disease, so what chance containing this, or the next one, or the one after that?

Every day, even old diseases become immune to antibiotics because of abuse by humans, which means that we will, in the future, be unable to cure diseases easily cured in the past.

A self inflicted injury.

The difference to measles is that we have bunch of confused people who are against sciences, actively fighting against the vaccinations. This makes some of the less educated people to believe their propaganda and their kids to suffer.

With more aggressive viruses, like SARS was, the nutters don't have time to group against protecting human population.

I agree with your first paragraph.

There is no cure for a virus, and so far there is no vaccine or similar for the virus in the OP.

Short of banning all passenger air travel, it's probably going to spread world wide, as the incubation period is 10 days.

Probably the only thing stopping it so far is that it seems unlikely to be spread human to human. That may change.

Uh Oh. The official count this morning jumped to 200 people in Wuhan with one more death, confirmation of one case in Shenzhen and unconfirmed reports of cases in Beijing and Shanghai. Clearly there is at least limited human-human transmission.

With Chinese New Year about to start, countless millions will go home and later return through Wuhan's centrally located rail hub, one of the biggest in the country made of many stations.

More about new cases, currently 170 cases are in hospital:

- 126 cases are mild

-  35 = severe

- 9 = critical

Someone looked up official travel figures that indicate 66 million people will travel to/thru Wuhan for the Chinese New Year.

Total numbers are still quite low. The key thing is whether the virus transfers from human to human or not.

If it does, yes, then there is a reason for alarm. If not, then it will most likely stay as local problem, depending how many animals and raw meat is been moved outside of the area.

The fact that it is likely to be person to person infection may be the reason as to why the number is relatively low. Unlike SARS which is spread airborne and in items which the particles have deposited.

I mean human to human instead of animal to human.

Some viruses we get from animals can make us sick, but can't spread from human to human.
