Another Chinese tourist to Thailand has been quarantined after it was confirmed that he carried the latest Wuhan coronavirus.

On Friday (January 17),, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Public Health, revealed that a 74-year-old Chinese woman, who arrived in Thailand on January 13, was quarantined in Bamrasnaradu Infectious Disease Institute. She will be treated until she is fully cured and then allowed to return home.

The authorities said the patient did not have any link with the previous case found in Thailand.

Since January 3, 21 people have shown symptom of the virus -- 12 have already been sent home while two patients are being treated at Bamrasnaradu institute in a separate room.

The condition of the first confirmed patient has improved a lot with no fever and he is awaiting medical confirmation of being free from the virus. The second patient is currently undergoing treatment and would be able to return home once the symptoms of the virus disappear.

Of the people found to be in close contact with the infected persons -- 16 persons with the first patient and 20 with the second -- none were found with the new strains of the coronavirus.

There are no concerns yet of an outbreak in Thailand.

Thailand finds second case of new Chinese virus, says no outbreak

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand has found a second case of a new Chinese coronavirus, authorities said on Friday, as they ramped up checks on Chinese visitors, nearly a million of whom are expected for Lunar New Year holidays next week.

The latest patient is from China's central city of Wuhan, which has reported 41 cases of pneumonia potentially linked to the new type of virus, with two deaths, while hospitals worldwide scramble to guard against any spread.

The 74-year-old woman, quarantined since arriving in Thailand on Monday, was found to be infected, said Sukhum Karnchanapimai, permanent secretary of the Public Health Ministry.

He urged Thais to stay calm, adding that there was no outbreak in the country.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause infections ranging from the common cold to severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

Thailand, which is on high alert ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays, said on Monday it had found a 61-year-old Chinese woman carrying a strain of the coronavirus, the first time it was detected outside China.

Japan reported its first case of the infection on Thursday, after a Japanese man returned from visiting Wuhan.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said the virus could spread and warned hospitals against it..

Thai health officials have stepped up monitoring at four airports receiving daily flights from Wuhan - Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueng, Chiang Mai and Phuket - and others that receive charter flights from the Chinese city.

Since Jan. 3, Thailand has screened 13,624 passengers.

Health officials also asked Thai AirAsia and China Southern Airlines, which run direct daily flights from Wuhan, to halt boarding by those suffering from high fever and respiratory symptoms, and reschedule their flights.

Perhaps Thailand should ban tourists from China until the virus has been eradicated.

Oh!  Sorry; the tourist numbers would drop.  Silly me!

Yes don't worry.

You can't have just 40+ cases in Wuhan and now 3 international travellers in Thailand and Japan be infected.  Wuhan has 19 million people but only ~5000 international travellers leave from its airport per day.  Best estimate is there are probably over 1000 people. There must also be some human to human transmission. Or Wuhan's meat market is the most popular on Earth.

Exactly how did the authorities establish that none of the 36 people who had been in 'close contact' with the 2 infected people did not have the new strain of the coronavirus ?

If the above mentioned 36 people were in close proximity during the 2 or 3 hour flight from China to the persons who have been confirmed as having the virus, then they are not gong to show any signs or symptoms of the virus after such a short period of time.  According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the incubation period (time from initial contact to showing signs/symptoms) for the coronavirus is anywhere between 4 and 14 days.

So the authorities have let 36 potential carriers of the virus into the Kingdom and have clearly stated that "there are no concerns yet of an outbreak in Thailand".  Wait for another 1 or 2 weeks and then see if any more cases are reported.

Do you honestly think they would report an outbreak ?    Me thinks not......

Ban Chinese? Of course, not! Ban Americans. It's all their fault. If those pushy Americans hadn't invented the airplane, the Chinese wouldn't be flying in here all sick.

So 2 confirmed cases arrived from Wuhan plus another 20+ secondary infections in Thailand in only a couple of weeks, but in Wuhan the Chinese authorities say only 41 cases in their city??

Arrivals into Thailand must be a tiny percent of the total population of Wuhan, and Thailand finds 2 cases.

China was criticised by the WHO for under-reporting the scale of SARS and so hampering the control measures, and now they are at it again.

They must have thousands of cases all over China by now.

The BBC Online News carries an article today where many Disease Scientists are assessing the real number at approximately 1700 persons in China that are infected.

They are basing their  calculations on the population of Wuhan ( 19 M) and that only 3,800 fly out to International Destinations every day, along with other data generated by Computer analysis.

I think it may be time to buy a face mask at least.

I agree 100% with your observation.  There's no way that they (Thai authorities) will ever admit an outbreak of the coronavirus, that would be a total 'loss of face'.  What I do expect to see in the next week or so is a big announcement by one of the universities that the have just discovered a wonder vaccine to cure the coronavirus, just like they did for MERS and Ebola.
