MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's Balearic Islands banned pub crawl tours and happy hours in three holiday hotspots on Friday in a string of new measures to crack down on binge-drinking tourists.

Booze vending machines, party boats, free bars and adverts for alcoholic drinks were also forbidden in Mallorca's Playa de Palma and Magaluf, as well as the West End in Ibiza's Sant Antoni.

Tourists will also not be allowed to buy alcohol in those areas between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m., authorities said.

The new regulations also outlawed "balconing", where revellers jump off balconies, often into hotel swimming pools - a practice that has killed dozens of drunken visitors over the years.

"With this, the Balearic Islands become the first destination in Europe to fight back against tourism based on excess," Iago Negueruela, the regional official in charge of economy and tourism, told reporters.

Anyone "balconing" or allowing it to happen would be expelled from their hotel and could be fined up to 60,000 euros (£51,098.83) ($66,540), he said.

Some traders said the measures would hurt small businesses on the Mediterranean islands.

"I find this exaggerated and disproportionate," Jose Tirado, president of Mallorca's Tourism Services and Businesses Association, told Spain's state television.

Good news - bring in such binge and booze regulations for the resorts here in Thailand!

I agree. People in Pattaya can drink themselves into a stippor, passing out at the bar, getting into fights and engaging in all sorts of dysfunctional and dangerous behavior; all in the name of cash and greed. The public safety issue is outweighed by the lack of liability for places that serve alcohol to intoxicated patrons and the trouble they end up in. Those that drink responsibly are often the victims of those that don't.

oh go ahead ibiza and mallorca and kill yourself. Mykonos and the rest of Greece and Italy, Berlin and co will clap their hands and cheer you up.

This already damanged them enough, many people went to mykonos instead.... Not sure what the point of ibiza is without party, it's a party island, nothing else.

Some people on here need to get a life. Telling other people how to live their lives, come on! Youngsters go on holiday to party and that's what Ibiza etc, specialised in. I am sure the local aconomy is geared around that so when you take it away watch businesses close like a row of domino's and as for the youngsters we'll they will just find a new party town who wants their money. Utter stupidity.

I don't know Mallorca, I have never being there

But what we don't realise is that these are real places where real people live, they welcome the "business" but at the same time they are concerned about their region and the don't want to become "disney world"

I was reading an article about "over tourism" in Santorini and Mykonos. where so many people go there , first the experience is compromised for all, and second the locals had it. now they limit the number of cruise ship passengers to  8,000 per day , still a large number for a small island.

I am sure the Mallorca region is a very nice place, and people should go there for that, not for a place where they can be A-holes.

I know this is not a  thread about Greece, but that is a destination that i have some experience in.

Me and the wife go to Greece almost every summer for the past ten years , we would like to but we have never gone to Mykonos or Santorini  because we are told it's a zoo.

"Rapid growth means strained infrastructure and overcrowding in big cities and at major attractions. During recent months we have seen tension between locals and visitors in destinations including Barcelona, Venice, Amsterdam, Dubrovnik, Madrid, Mallorca and Kyoto, and “overtourism” has become something of a buzzword. Don't know about Mallorca, never went there.

But Ibiza was down the last 2 years we went there, less and less people:

With tourism numbers and club attendances now in decline, people are getting extremely nervous. And it's not just the English promoters and the Italian DJs, but also the local business owners. In 2019, anticipate a push back, as the notion that killing the economy isn’t the best way to help the local population is finally embraced.

Elsewhere on the island, Ibiza's obsession with an older, 5 star audience is starting to bite, while San Antonio is bucking the trend and showing signs of growth.

Guess this didn't work out...Sounds as braindead as phuket and pattaya.

The official arrival numbers say otherwise, but speaking with the locals there everyone was complaining that the hotels are emptier than before.

The only ones not complaining where some rich spanish retirees that moved there for retirement and have absolutely nothing to do with the economy there, the same ones who complain about the music i suppose.

Let's face it, like Phuket and Pattays these place are in complete <deleted> when the tourists stop coming, there is zero economy going on besides that.

if they <deleted> off the tourists too much they can all go home because there's nothing to buy and sell there anymore anyway. These places are damn expensive and people pay only expensive prices if they get fun in return. fact.

if i want to have my peace and quiteness i go to Fuerteventura, Menorca, Teneriffe and co - it's cheaper and looks way better.

The spanish tourism numbers remind me of our glorious TAT. Bunch of old farts deciding what's best, out of touch with reality - like our world class family resort pattaya.

Free markets work better than any of the horsecrap these braindead politicians come up with while they sit in their office and <deleted>.

Not to mention how bad this <deleted> is for the real estate market there....thats the only thing they have besides that, many jobs in construction and tourism...

I'd struggle to find somewhere to have a beer at 7am in Pattaya, yet in UK I can do that almost anywhere in a Weatherspoons

When Pattaya was a 24 hour open town back in the early - mid 90's, there seemed to be far less crime and violence, it was much more laid back, no pressure on drinkers to get <deleted>faced in a short period of time, and likewise no pressure on owners to get the baht out of the punter before closing time, much more relaxed - bring back those days i say!!!
