Thai IT-engineers webdesigners, stores and even authorities sometimes haven't got a clue what they're doing. Hopefully when they realize that they screwed up, they will fix it. It's funny that it happened the same day, January 15th, as Bangkok Bank stopped honoring the old ATM cards and you had to get a new one with a "chip".
