"Black Snow" - when are the authorities going to do something serious about sugar cane burning?

In Civilized countries, they do not burn  the husks of previous crops, the plow them under to put nutrients back in the soil. But the term Civilized does not apply to Thailand, sooooo....

Aus used to, then they stopped it for maybe 20 years.

Now, in some places, it's back.

So does that mean we are not civilised any more...??

this raised my eyebrow when i first read it. so why? they don't work at night? no torches? all drunk by nightfall?

makes no sense

can't they just pop round in the morning and arrest the landowner?

It makes sense because the only thing one can think of is that they are on the take, e.g. I give you big brown envelopes and you guys do nothing, I mean come on, who in their right minds allows farmers to burn and pollute the air when there are other alternatives, like machinery, yes costs rise and the sugar cane factories would have to increase their prices to market, but it would appear that the $ is more important to the corporates and those on the take.

That's the only explanation, because people in high positions cannot be that dumb, although we know are lot are, but their pockets keep getting filled, dumb and rich at everybody's else's expense.

Yes bit strange that they cant just arrest a land owner in the morning. But the proof is worse then he could just say someone else lit it i did not do it and then they have no case.

I think they need to catch them in the act. They should make it iligal to sel burnt cane then things would be easier to check.

you are right

that's the way to go

make it illegal for the factories to buy burnt cane

with a very big fine and a real enforcement. with daily

controls and mediatize largely all the offenders,

If the farmers have nowhere to sel their burnt cane

it won't take too long before they stop burning

Yes this is the only way to go.. but the government does not have the balls to anger the farmers. They let the farmers go on and do as they please.

Also the government might have some secret involvement in the sugarcane industry that stops them from strict laws.

Doing this they should soon have to deal with the anger of all

the Thai population. The health problem is nationwide and now in all the medias

they can't hide the dust under the carpet anymore or eternally accuse the neighboring

countries (Whiches have also a big responsabilities, especialy Laos and Cambodia).

I have the feeling your last sentence is right

has usual the money for the ''happy few'' is the engine

at the expense of the well-being of the majority

Just wait for the first burnt kids or livestock of farmers burning their fields ........

Pathetic, irresponsible, idiotic, selfish and lawless - just to describe the situation!

Nothing to do with ignorance of the correct way to use "husks".

They burn the leaves off to get rid of the snakes and make it easier to cut.......BY HAND.

Cutting sugarcane, in +30 degrees of heat, is a ******* nightmare

Except that in civilized countries the cane is cut mechanically;
If the good and brilliant and his incredible greatness General Prayuth really took care of the happiness of the country which he directs, he would use the money of the Chinese second-hand submarine and new armored vehicles to buy  some machines that cut the sugar cane and also a few thousand modern agricultural tractors to replace these old 66 CV Ford which date from Mathusalem.
but it's probably asking too much ...
