Meghan Markle's father defends his reputation in new documentary

LONDON (Reuters) - The estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has sought to defend his reputation in a new documentary to be broadcast on Wednesday, but said he fears he will never speak to his daughter or her husband, Britain's Prince Harry, again.

Thomas Markle, 75, has already accused his daughter of "cheapening" the British royal family in part of an interview released on Sunday, a day after Buckingham Palace said Prince Harry and his wife would no longer be working members of the monarchy.

Harry and Meghan's decision to cut down on official engagements has sparked turmoil in the royal family, and the couple will now give up royal duties entirely in order to pursue an independent future as a result of Buckingham Palace's announcement.

Aside from Sunday's clip, the rest of "Thomas Markle: My Story" was recorded for Channel 5 in October 2019 over six days at his home in Mexico, before that decision.

In extracts released by the broadcaster, Markle gives his perspective on the rift with his daughter and apologises for missing Meghan and Harry's wedding.

Confusion over whether Meghan's father would come to Windsor to walk her down the aisle threatened to overshadow her wedding to Harry in May 2018, and eventually he did not travel after suffering a heart attack.

"I want to apologise to the queen and to the royal family," he said in a clip regarding the wedding.

TRASHY THINGS

Markle said that the portrayal of him in the media had been unfair and that he decided to make the documentary "because I want everyone to know that I'm not all the trashy things that are being said about me."

"I want Harry and Meghan to see this video and know that this is not fair," he said.

Thomas Markle and his daughter have been estranged since her marriage to Harry. Earlier this month, Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper submitted its defence to court action by Meghan over the publication of a private letter she sent her father.

He said that it was "almost a joke" that he heard news of Meghan's pregnancy on the radio rather than directly from his daughter, and said it was possible the couple would not see him again.

"The last time they might see me is being lowered into the ground," he said. "I don't think at this point they are thrilled to see me or want to talk to me."

I can't imagine how someone can allow their relationship with their father get so bad. A lot of people have huge arguments with family but at the end of the day you pick up the phone and sort it out because they're still your family.

It says a lot about her character that this virtue signalling actress has fallen out with pretty much her whole family (father, siblings) and even a lot of her old friends. I guess she doesn't need them any more now she's got the Prince of Woke. A ruthless social climber.

I see she's threatening to sue the Canadian press now, she's only been there 5 minutes. I guess she hasn't worked out that you can't use them when you need them and then press the OFF button when you don't.

They'll be expected to turn up for the launch of a SussexRoyal cosmetics line or somesuch because, hey! we're celebs!. Same with all people who seek fame. You don't get to dictate the terms.

Anyone any idea how that private letter got into the public domain.

As I understand it he gave an "edited" version to the press.

This is all about money... the Markle's should have done their home work first, Inlaws to the royal family are not taken on the pay role, they are like pet poodles, may get some tit bit's if they are good, but also a boot where it hurts if they go sh---ing all over the place.

Haven't spoken to my UK daughter for 11 years.

Have no intention of having any contact with her ever again.

Same reason as Markle's dad, daughter sided with mom in the divorce.

It appears to be fairly common.

I do not know if that was the case, It was only days before the wedding that there any talk there may be a family rift, there was a lot of talk that the real issue was that Megan's half siblings by her farther were not invited to the wedding and getting royal titles.

Megan's mother was invited and attended, and she was well received.

He gave up a lot to help his daughter with her education and her early adult years. She has never acknowledged this, but she has told the media that her life was hard, and that she had to take all manner of jobs to survive. Total BS.

He "leaked" it to the Mail BUT after it was already being quoted in other sources. His other daughter has accused on record (I watched it on TV last week) that Meghan released information on parts of the letter through select friends to the media, prior.

Strange story indeed. I read the letter in the paper and thought it was written in a style and text that already knew it was going to become public knowledge. Its like something drafted by the "palace", not something sincerely from a daughter to a father IMHO.

Poor bloke, forked out thousand for her education then 15k for her first wedding but now she is too important to speak to him, she would rather pose for pics at a doggie shelter. He did one silly press thing and they never forgave him for it, she does one a week. Disgusting that Harry never went to see him before they got married, not important enough for such a 'woke' prince.
