webfact
Phuket ferry suspended after pickup truck rolls off the deck, into the sea By Khunanya Wanchawet The pickup rolled into the sea while the ferry was returning to Phuket. Photo: Eakkapop Thongtub PHUKET: A small ferry operating between Phuket and Koh Yao Yao, off Phuket’s east coast, has been suspended from operating after a pickup truck that was not tied down rolled off the boat and into the sea off Koh Siray yesterday afternoon (Jan 22). The ferry, called “Koh Yao”, departed for Koh Yao Yai at 2pm, Phuket Marine Office Director Wiwat Chitchertwong told The Phuket News. The accident occurred at about 3pm while the ferry was returning to Phuket, he added. “There was nothing to prevent the vehicle from falling into the water. The owner of the truck did not apply the handbrake, and there were no tethers to prevent the truck from moving,” Mr Wiwat said. Cars are supposed to lashed to the deck. A handbrake won't stop a car falling off the deck. Even on a car carrier the cars are lashed down. Lazy crew got complacent.
RotBenz8888
Probably went well the last time, so they decided to scrap the precautions. Seems familiar?

I've traversed many times on a ro-ro ferry in a first world country and never was my vehicle lashed to the deck. It seems to me like "park" on an automatic or "in gear" on a straight drive (standard transmission) would have avoided this dunking. 7

I used the Ferry a couple of days ago and was very happy that the log truck in front of me stopped and the off sider hopped out and put a log behind the wheel as it had no handbrake. Tbone999
Surprised they didn't blame it on brake failure????????????????????????
trainman34014
I've been on most Car Ferries toThai Islands and have never seen any vehicles lashed down and anyone who is dumb enough to leave their vehicle without the hand brake on deserves to lose their car. Never known another country where so many drivers don't use their handbrakes; be it parking, at lights or road junctions, particularly on slopes....clueless !
TallGuyJohninBKK
This OP actually presents an interesting question pertaining to the real world outside Thailand. For real world places that use vehicle carrying ferries, do they have devices or restraints to hold the vehicles in place, or is it left up to the vehicle owners to have the brains to leave their vehicles in park with the handbrake on??? I can only speak of personal experiences, in Sydney, Australia we used to have the Mortlake Ferry, no tie downs, InterIsland in New Zealand also not tied down for couple of hours trip. Koh Lanta which I am a frequent user again no provision for tie down. It is common sense on ferries where you exit your car to stop engine and put it in park and apply handbrake, however on Koh Lanta ferry nobody stops engines, keeps air con running, hops out for a cigarette and leaves the children jumping around inside....what could possibly go wrong ? ? ?...... 2
Daffy D
Didn't something similar happen a while ago? Car rolled of a ferry into the water. There were no barrier across the ramp to stop this happening. New regulation all roll-on roll-off must be fitted with barriers to top cars falling off. Seems this ferry did not get the memo. tifino
maybe, like up in the snowfield ywhere all vehicles have be equipped with snowchains... ferry Co. should belatedly insist cars are owner self insured, with these
