China increases water release to help Mekong basin countries

China has agreed to increase the rate of water release from Lan Chang River from 850 cubic metres per second to 1000 cubic metres per second in order to meet the urgent needs of Thailand and other countries in the Mekong River Basin.

 

The Chinese government reportedly is willing to cooperate with countries in the Mekong River Basin to share water resources information, strengthening cooperation to overcome the drought situation.

 

China is reportedly helping Thailand in the time of need due to the strong relations between the two nations.

 

Since 2019, rainfall in the Lan Chang-Mekong River basin has continuously decreased as a result of climate change, causing severe drought situations in China and many others along the Mekong River basin.

 

At Lan Chang River in China, the average precipitation is 728 millimetres, 34 per cent lesser than usual. Until January 21, 2020, agricultural areas in 1.07 million villages (450,000 rai) were affected by the drought because of the shortage of water in 15 rivers and 43 dams in Yunnan province of China.

 

Some 2.9 million people and livestock face a drinking water crisis since the water level at various dams has hit the lowest point compared to a similar situation in previous years. If the drought continues to prolong, Yunnan province will face a critical situation of having no usable water.

 

The Chinese government has put its best efforts to maintain the amount of water released from the Lan Chang River.

Thais have no idea what the future holds. China is building 10 dams at the beginning of the Mekong. At middle distance the river passes through Laos, they are now building 10 dams as well. Both countries say in the name of renewable energy.  Water to Thailand and Vietnam you might as well forget about.

This is the reason Chinese must not be given a single thousandth of an inch. They will keep crawling through the cracks for decades executing their plan that moves so slowly people forget about it. Vigilance.

I agree, they are slowly buying up resources worldwide with no fanfare or announcements,  with smiles and money. I give credit to Trump to standing up to the Chinese where everyone before him capitulated or fawned over them...

 

They are insatiable, insidious, devious and very, very clever. Just ask Cambodia...if they have figured it out yet.

 

Thailand is also under their spell, but think they are smarter, and are about to learn a very harsh lesson sooner or later.

Very kind of the Chinese to let trough a bit more water in the mekong after they heavily restricted it. Truly because of the strong relationship between Thailand and China.

The other Mekong neighbouring states want to place dams, too. But mostly corruption, and western hippies prevent them.

 

The Chinese dams are not a problem per se. The problem is climate change.

 

If the Chinese had no dam ... then there would be no water to release. It would be long gone anyway ... but nitpickers and naysayers here all over. Chinese the new enemy in a country you don't want to live happy but nitpick about everything you simply don't understand.

 

How high would be the level of the Mekong at Nakhon Phanom or Tat Phanom if there was no dam? Obviously lower. Because now it is higher because they can release extra water, which they would not have without the dam. A no brainer ...
