Two women missing in Kandal after overloaded boat capsizes

Rescue workers in Kandal province are scouring the Mekong river for two women who went missing after their boat capsized Sunday afternoon.

 

Men Sum, chief of Roka Kaong Muoy commune in Muk Kampoul district, said yesterday the boat keeled over in Peam village. He added 12 people were on board the vessel on their way to Sneha island when it sank 10 metres away from a riverbank. Ten people were rescued, but 18-year-olds Yoern Sreypich and Srey Na are still missing.

 

“The boat had a capacity for only four or five people, but there were more than 10 people on board,” Mr Sum said. “Local authorities are conducting a search and rescue mission.” He said the families of the young women have travelled from Phnom Penh to help look for them.
