CharlieH
I opened an account with TMB a little while ago, they refused at first stating the work permit thing, but I said no I'm retired and showed the visa etc. She went off to the Managers office came back and no problem. The interesting point here was that during the opening of the account she only looked at the passport NOTHING from it was recorded. She only used my Thai ID Card and Yellow book for numbers etc. and recorded that info, so my passport is never needed now at TMB when I do anything,

On reflection, a letter from TVF confirming my POTY status would've cleared this up! My example is a couple of years back, my Thai accountant in Chiang Mai (was my MBA student, now has her MBA, she's a qualified lawyer and soon will have her Ph.D. in Science in behavior). She speaks perfect English, has established a quite successful company: accounting, law and business development consultancy. She has many foreign clients who recommend her service to newbie business owners. She took a new client to the bank (Thai bank) to open accounts for clients new business, personal savings acccount for farang partner of new company and to apply for CC cards for business and for client. Bank lady sets the tone by saying, it's only 30 minutes to my lunch time, why do you come to the bank at this time? Accountant ignores her and asks her to proceed to open the accounts etc. Bank lady puts a number of forms in front of the farang (so far she hasn't acknowledge that the farang is sitting there), and tells the Thai consultant to tell the farang to sign all the documents. Accountant / consultant says NO, because: - 'The forms are all blanks and I don't ask my clients to sign blank forms'. - 'The documents are 100% Thai language, no details whatever in English'. Bank lady says it's the bank procedure that 'customer must sign first', and says 'it's illegal in Thailand for any bank or other official documents to have any English language'. Consultant pulls some forms from her bag, forms from the same bank, different branch' all in English and indicates she will call her Ph.D. coaching class buddy who is a senior manager from the same bank, speaks perfect English, to get some confirmation of what the bank lady is saying about illegal procedure, etc. She calls her Ph.D. buddy, he confirms it's not bank procedure and says it's Thai law that banking documents can be in Thai, English or Chinese and all Thai banks must use all 3 languages as needed. He's in the same city on business and asks if it would convenient for new customer and accountant to came back at 3.00 pm and he will personally take care of the documents. Bank lady now says she has to go home. Within a few moments the branch manager has had a call from the visiting senior guy to instruct the local manager and the service lady to be available at 3.00 pm. Bank lady resigns on the spot and walks out. Local manager now tells the accountnat she is very rude and she is a troublemaker. Meeting at 3.00 pm proceeds with all documents completed quickly, new client and accountant leave the bank. Within a couple of minutes new client gets a call from the bank senior who strongly apologizes. Senior bank guy also speaks to the accountant and says the local manager will be been reassigned to a senior clerical position and says there will be training team visit that branch for 3 or 4 days from Monday the next week. Senior bank guy later shares with the accountant that the bank has regular complaints about similar stuff. As a UK citizen, I have never ever had an issue with a UK bank. Super easy to do everything. When I was buying my house I had to go in and do a CHAPS transfer to my solicitor of about 75k GBP - took 2 minutes. I can deposit money to anyone's account for which I have the account number and sort code, and don't need to show ID. I can withdraw cash from my account over the counter with a driving license. Also takes only a minute or two. To get a new ATM card I either click a button online or make a phone call, card arrives at my house a couple of days later - zero paperwork. Compare that to Thai banks - whatever you want to do it is always a huge uphill struggle. Edited January 28, 2020 by SteveK
holy cow cm
I have to go in this week to K Bank and do a new card even though my debit visa card has a chip already and doesn't' expire until 2022. Just comes up error and cannot read. This time going to use the pink id and the yellow book and see if can get a real CC Visa with secured funds. Deli
K - Bank worst ever. For the same thing, they kept me 50 minutes waiting, 30 minutes paperwork, 10 minutes at the ATM setting up the new card. Welcome to non - efficiency.

They’ve closed the account down in my home town, so I can’t do anything over the counter when I am home unless I travel 45mins to the next town. That said some of the OLB processes (such as getting a new card etc) are easier.

Based on this thread - Take the Passport with which you opened your account (even if its an old unused passport which has since been renewed). While there change your ‘ID details’ to your Pink ID card (your number should never change), so you don’t have the same issues when you change your passport and the number changes (unless you are from a country where your passport number never changes). Regarding the Credit Card (secured deposit etc) I simply have a second card on my Wife’s account (i.e. my Wife is the primary CitiBank Credit Card holder, I am issued a second card - its no different from having my own card. [the irony is, I’m the primary earner, my Wife is the primary card holder !]
