The list of countries that have already evacuated their citizens from the Wuhan region by air is getting longer and longer, now joined lately by Germany and Russia. Japan has had at least two rounds of evacuation flights and is planning its 3rd already, I believe, among various others.

And meanwhile, Thailand, good friend to China and the military leaders in both countries as close as kith and kin, continues to have its citizens stuck there waiting for an evacuation flight that's been SO slow in coming. Apparently, this is a case of friends WITHOUT benefits!

More than 100 Germans and family members landed in Frankfurt on Saturday after being evacuated from Wuhan. Around 250 Indonesians were being evacuated from Hubei.

Japan plans to send another chartered plane mid-week or later to bring back Japanese nationals who are still in Hubei, the foreign ministry said on Sunday.

MOSCOW — Russia's aerospace defence forces, part of the armed forces, will start evacuating Russian citizens on Saturday from China due to the coronavirus outbreak, news agencies reported, citing the Kremlin spokesman.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters the evacuation would take place in regions that had been most affected by the outbreak, Interfax and TASS news agencies reported.

And yet somehow, this group of Thais from one school managed to get a flight out on a Thai airline!

Seventeen students from Surat Thani Technical College, who were doing a high vocational certificate course in electronics at Xingtai Polytechnic College in Hubei, China, arrived at Surat Thani International Airport on Saturday (February 1) at 9.20am.

They flew by Thai Smile Airways after being allowed to travel back to Thailand on the night of January 31. They were tested for the new coronavirus at Beijing International Airport and Suvarnabhumi Airport but none of them tested positive.

However, embassy officers have not been able to reach Wuhan city. The officers are trying to send food, medicine and masks to all Thais but it has to be verified by Chinese officers.

The Embassy Staff (Officers) I assume already have clearance to Enter Wuhan City it was organized by the Thai Government or maybe that is the problem?

They might want to redo the test.  Some western countries have modified their screening tests.

This is Thai news media... When they say "test," I'm betting what that actually means is they didn't have fevers that showed up on the thermal scanners... Not that some medicos at the airport did the PCR bloodtests on them upon arrival.

And also from the same article -- just great!!!:

The parent of one of the students said they were relieved the children were able to return home safely without being held in quarantine in Bangkok.

Then lastly, dunno when the photo with the OP article was taken, but half of the students shown in the accompanying photo aren't even wearing masks!

'Thai evacuation plans on hold as ‘China confident it can control the situation’

Oh dear, that's a pretty serious mistake imho - a sacking error if ever there was one - time will tell. Somebody was probably looking for a reason to do nothing - probably because he or she had no clue what to do.

Still, Thais know best.

Didn't I read last week that the government had some air-force transports ready to evacuate students and tourists? I am sure that any rich and connected are already out. The truth seems to be that Thailand doesn't want to upset one of its few friendly governments over the lives of those who are left.

Huh? Why would the rich hang around waiting for cattle class

It's really starting to be clear where the ruling Sino-Thais got their 'confidence' from.

15% of Thais are Chinese. Look at Wikipedia, Chinese in Thailand, and many new residents are from China, still growing. Vietnam kicked them out after the Vietnam war.
