It's not just the virus making the streets empty.  The actual Chinese New Year holiday ended last Thursday and people went back to work ending most holidays.

People always have more fear of a new and unfamiliar danger especially when it's a silent killer like an unknown disease.

 

It can strike any where at any time and anyone can be a victim.

Chinese are not well travelled people - they are brought here on very well fine tuned packages - plane - bus - hotel - bus - eating - bus - hotel - rinse repeat, being ripped off at every opportunity possible - they think it is all normal because they don't know any better - they are herded everywhere - charged a fortune and after 10 days shipped off home thinking - well that is what a holiday is...……..they have no concept of travel 

 

we from the west are always well travelled - it is very hard for us to understand what exactly is going on with these Chinese (so called) tourists - they just don't know any better and are being taken advantage of - very sad really and is just massive exploitation of people that don't know any better or different

 

and no it isn't really funny at all

But compare the size of China and the size of Phuket. Safer in Chonqing with 20 million people spread over a huge area, or confined in small areas of a small island with potential carriers? Most wont be going back to Hubei province.

Totally agree. I have N95 masks from Amazon.

The mask I bought 3 months ago was not for the C.Virus. The 50 baht mask was an observation.

What did Thailand do 10-15 years ago before the Chinese starting making enough money to travel? When I first came to Thailand over 20 years ago you would have a hard time finding a handful of Chinese tourists.

Factually incorrect. This infection is primarily a respiratory related illness. Serious cases will result in a higher use of ICU's and  will require an intensive respiratory therapy intervention.

Many of the countries listed do not  have the ICU capabilities to handle 1000+ patients. Thailand in particular does not have sufficient ICU coverage, nor qualified medical personnel in rural areas. Thailand  currently suffers from serious air pollution. It is no secret that  air pollution damages the lungs and causes extensive irritation of lung tissue reducing lung capacity.  If the illness  spreads in Thailand it will have a similar outcome to that seen in China.

I paid 20 baht each for these from Lazada pack of 25. Also another 3M brand N95 pack of 50 for even less. This was three weeks ago. Sold out now.

If Thailand's tourism industry gets absolutely decimated by this, then the TAT will have to stop putting out BS figures and the government will have to pull its head out of the sand and actually do something (other than promoting Pokemon Go and durian KitKats).

Thailand has an incredible moment in this crisis to show how responsible it is, how deserved it is to be a premier tourist destination. Should Thailand continue to show competence in handling this virus, it will come out in the end of all this able to command an even higher level of respect as a world class travel destination. IMO the numbers look good right now. 19 infected, 5 successfully treated and released, the remainder being successfully treated and no deaths. Well done Thailand, considering Thailand is one of the primary and closest destination for the affected (Chinese).

We had the bird flu, the SARS and now Coronusvirus; the first two we have overcome, and we will this one as well. Sure is a setback but the numbers we later get up and even get more as people have missed a holiday and still want to go at a later time. It was always like that in tourism and will be the same this time.

True the Chinese coming to Thailand are not well informed on travel, chosen Thailand because is the nearest and less expensive destination for them. Ripping them off is a common thing to Thai tourism, in the 80' they have done this with the Taiwanese as well and lost later out on a big numbers. 

Well traveled Chinese go to today to further destination like Europe, Egypt etc. ; there are even whole cruise ships catering for the Chinese customers. Let the Chinese enjoy their holiday as we like to enjoy ours.

Do you really think this bit of reality will have any impact on the BS figures? Since when have they interfaced with "reality". I don't know how TAT will spin this as a positive... my imagination is not that great, but I bet they come up with something.
