Exactly! what a heinous, vile, sickening crime ......... overstaying.

Murderers, rapists, drunk drivers, kiddie fiddlers drug dealers just pale into insignificance compared to this willful criminal, here for over six years spending money in the economy but without a correct visa stamp in his passport.

Lucky immigration got him!

God knows what fate would have awaited him, if he had fallen into the clutches of an angry mob of the self righteous, indignant, holier than thou pitchfork wielding THAI VISA members.

Better get a proper visa then you will be safe.

Another one, 20,000 baht fine but the cheapest visa ever.

Indeed but if the Thais had sense they'd make it 500 a day indefinately. Thrown in the slammer until the full 967,500 Baht is paid.....then you'd have some of these rogues thinking twice

I think they all fell into the same trap as me. There are so many bigots on TVF that it’s sometimes too easy to just apply a broad brush stroke. Kindly allow me to apologise on their behalf as well.

Sure, post 34,

I would suggest to the French the recolonization of Algeria, because given the craze of the Algerians to continue to maintain what the French have left or done, it looks like in 1830, with the pebble, the gourbis, the prickly pears, and even more women wearing the niqab.

Do not put racism where it does not exist.
The word "rid" shocked you, it's a common term.
You found this language very dehumanizing. ????
Unless you have a very big fortune, maybe your inhabitant of France has taken advantage of the largesse of this country.
Was it humanity? A parasite ?
In order not to be known to immigration for almost 6 years, he had to have a good reason.

And just how does that inspire confidence?  Was the Frenchman heading up a criminal enterprise?  Was he endangering anyone through deeds or actions?

If anything it reduces my confidence in the efficiency of the immigration department if it takes more than 5 years to discover the wrong doing, and that only because someone ratted him out!

You need to look at this article in the larger context of a media supported government campaign to scapegoat foreigners as a source of social problems. This has been going on for at least several years: giving highlighted media attention to every cultural faux pas and misbehavior by foreigners no matter how minor, encouraging the public to spy on and report on foreigners, treating every overstay apprehension as if it was a major criminal arrest.

In recent weeks we have seen arrests of elderly individuals, at times with well-established roots in the community, being portrayed as likely criminal elements and serious threats to public safety. We've also seen reports of people being arrested for overstays of a few days or weeks being presented as if they posed a serious risk to public safety. The number of arrests of foreigners who have been involved in serious criminal activity such as human trafficking, boiler room scams, drug smuggling, or other serious felonies has been very minimal, even from the very outset of these drives to purge the country of foreigners purportedly damaging Thailand's social fabric and reputation abroad. If you contrast this with the government's lip service efforts to improve public safety in regards to drug abuse, domestic violence, and road safety, or improving social harmony by addressing income inequality, falling farm incomes, and the miserable educational system, and it is hard not to conclude that foreigners are being scapegoated for Thailand's homegrown social problems and the government's ineffectiveness in addressing them.

There is also almost never any publicity about the aftermath of these apprehensions: damage to the social fabric, loss of financial support for the immediate family, loss of members of the community in otherwise good standing, loss of customers, employees, employers, etc. Instead we are told only that these campaigns are improving confidence and social harmony.

Finally, I must note that you certainly take a lot of latitude in speculating about this individual's possible criminal activity. Is it because you have decided that he might be Arab, and you don't like Arabs? Do you not think that if he was suspected of criminal activity beyond immigration violations that this would not have been eagerly reported by the media?

Edit: Even though I would definitely argue that the article encourages xenophobic thinking, I never accused the article of being racist.

Gecko123,
I believe you are scattered.
If you have any concerns about the way Thailand manages her country, speak directly to her government.
Personally, I left my country because I disagreed with the way it was managed.
Fed up with foreigners wanting to put the country that welcomes them in their image.
If one day I find it too heavy to bear the Thai diet, I will go elsewhere.
As for whether I like the Arabs or not, I am the only judge.
And you don't know why some people prefer origins or races over others.
Respect the opinion of others, please and do not impose anything.

Easy. It's called racism.

I don't like most of the English speaking people in Pattaya, sometimes it is even hard to understand they speak English, and I only understand the words f... and f....ing, usually expressed 3 times in a sentence.

I avoid also the Arab area in the neighbourhood of Walking Street.

I don't consider myself as a racist, but maybe I am one.

Oh, no doubt he did it.  I just don't believe there are that many people in the world that are as squeaky clean as they make out.
