I wonder if members can give me an idea of how much I should be earning each month in order to have a 'middle class' life (and I appreciate this is really subjective). Did you care to get same basic information about visa and work permit rules in Thailand before considering to relocate? That depends a lot on you, as I said in my previous post a comfortable western middle class life style requires the figure I have indicated (200000/month for a family of 4). Now if you searched though this forum, as I did, you'd see that this topic has come up many times, and what strikes me is that there is something like a divide between people who agree with me and another population who believes that one can scrape by here for close to nothing. My feeling is that we have, on one hand professionals with true international backgrounds who come with solid packages and/or sound business plans to achieve an enviable lifestyle here. And on the other hand backpackers or retirees who come here because a cheap life doesn't go well with the Northern winter. I have lots of international experience, so forgive me for giving the wrong impression. I do not feel entitled. I visited Thailand some years ago and enjoyed my experiences a lot. I am newly married and so these concerns I have raised, however clumsily, are a genuine request for information. I am responsible for two, now. You will need seed money to buy furniture & car (at least 50% down on car if you are financing). My wife and I have no house or car payment and live comfortably on 100,000 baht a month. Some months we save money and others we do not. You need to figure out a budget, Rent depends on what you want, bedrooms, air conditioners, nice neighborhood. There is a really nice 3 bedroom house that is furnished around the corner for me for 30,000 baht a month. That would be the high side. You can rent a lesser non furnished house for as little as 7,000 baht. Utilities run me anywhere from 2000 baht to 4000 baht depending on the season. We have 4 a/c units but no more than 2 run at the same time. I do not scrimp on groceries and run about 15,000 a month. If you do not eat out, buy at local market and cut out farang food you might cut that in half. My wife and I do have good health insurance and runs about 10,000/month for both. It just depends on comfort and lifestyle. I did not retire to Thailand to live like a Thai. I want at least as much comfort or more than I had before I retired.
