Thais DO NOT care...road fatalities here will continue to be the deadliest in the world.

Dig deeper into the statistics and you'll find countries that are up to 100x as dangerous per registered vehicle as Thailand.  Thailand gets a bad rap on the per capita number because so many Thais can afford a scooter, and not so many can afford a much safer 4 wheeler.

Coming all the way from bangkok, it's late, you're tired, you want to get home quickly, and just as you get to the steep and twisty bit and you need to slow down and take care you can lose your head.

If only Lampang had hotels.

With showers.

And comfy beds.

and restaurants.

and waitresses to share the comfy beds with.

Before heading home the next day,

N0 N0, let's speed on into those slow twisting turns after 600km instead.

unfortunate name

What's very odd, though is that the Sanook article, that is the source for Thaivisa, doesn't mention the name, or age, of the victim at all but Thaivisa's version does.

Mind you, the Google Translate version of Sanook's headline does say...

"Horrible young man riding a big bike down the hill Crashed into a headless pole and bounced off the road".

...so, who knows, maybe the 'Thaivisa' name is correct.

Travelled that road many times he and friends must have been traveling very fast to lose control. It is a road with many curves but the road is wide and well maintained but the rider has to maintain concentration. My best wishes to the family on the loss of their loved one

I've driven that segment of road too as I live in the area.  Thais will literally straighten the road by driving from shoulder to shoulder.  Until they screw up.  And groups of Thai motorcyclists drive that segment of road at horrendously fast speeds while zig-zagging through slower traffic - slower as in driving at the posted speed limits.
Speed + Aggressiveness +  Stupidity is a recipe for disaster.  And it's the recipe for typical Thai driving.  Just another statistic.  Mai bpen rai.

Surprising what can get you on a bike even a long not so sharp bend.

After one of Barry Sheene's crashes he said the front wheel just suddenly went sideways on him. The crew searched the area where it had started and found what was left of a big fat earthworm squashed into the road right at the edge of the track. That's all it took to break the tyres grip.

Out here, dry season, dust and general <deleted> blowing about on the road can put you in the same place.
