Chiang mai mystery booms are back

Hello, I created a thread about this maybe 1 or 2 years ago. Recently I have noticed these 'boom' sounds again in the early morning hours. It sounds like a series of explosion far away, sometimes like around 10 in a row. I'm living near Wat Umong. The other day I heard them around 4:45am. Today (Sunday 9th February) around 5 am. This time I managed to snap a video. I hope you can see (and hear) this:

Sounds kind of strange in your video, but maybe that's due to the bad recording quality.

Thais make noise (sounds like shooting a gun, no idea if they really shoot or if they use fireworks) if somebody dies, maybe this was what you recorded.

Today is the Buddhist holiday Mahakha Bucha. Do the previous booms also correspond to holidays?

I recall your earlier post on this topic. I think you mentioned back then that they seemed to be in the direction of the airport. Is this the case again?

 

If so these explosions could be coming from there. Ground staff often use pyrotechnics called maroons or sometimes large 'air cannons' to scare birds off the airfield. This is usually done early in the morning before the first flights.

 

The apparent 'seasonal' nature of these bangs could mean that there are migratory birds that favour the airfield at this time of year.

Moonlover thank you. I have heard and seen those air bursts for a couple years since I have been living here. No clue why they did this. They usually do them in series of 2 and you can see they airburst explosion. I look due west across central, the airport, and you see the smoke blasts against Doi Sutheps flanks. I am on the 4th floor if I was lower I would not be able to see those explosions. Thanks for the explanation.

Hey @Davef2912 here's a simple way to more or less prove that the explosions are coming from the airport. Grab a stopwatch and wait for a flash. Start the timer and measure the elapsed time until you hear the bang.

 

Sound travels at 343 meters per second, so it's a simple calculation of time x 343 that will determine the distance from your pad. If it matches the distance from you to the airport I reckon we've nailed it.

Anybody know who I can call at airport to set up a bird feeding selfie area for when the chinese return in double after this small virus issue....they can set off all the "booms" they want---wont scare off my chinese bird lovers.....as my whistle doesnt seem to work when Im biking and they walk in the street.......

There is another possible explanation, I think.

 

I live 10 Kms from CM airport. I often hear these loud bangs anywhere from 2-3am. They are much closer than the airport is, (although sound travels long distances at night, I know).

 

There is also a temple for cremation about 1 Km from where I live. As I understand it, families set off fireworks when someone dies, regardless of the time. sign of respect? Grief? Passing of spirit?

 

I could be wrong. Someone will know.

I live between the airport and the ping river, and often hear these booms as well, usually around 5:00am. I figured it was something to do with the army base near the airport, but the air cannon explanation makes sense.

Hey moonlover, I actually never see a flash so I can't measure the distance.

 

I asked a friend who works at the airport, he said that they have those cannons but the usually use sirens to scare away the birds so maybe it isn't that after all.

Isn't there a Royal Thai Army Calvalry Division North of Town? Maybe artillery training?

Sunday mornings at 5 am? I would be surprised if it was artillery training as it usually requires a big manoeuvre field and is usually not conducted near inhabited areas.
