Oops! "Person of influence" among four in custody after botched temple abduction

A dash cam video posted to Facebook showed the moment four armed men went to a temple in Bangkok and abducted a man. 

 

But they got the wrong person. Later they tried to pay off the family of the man but they wouldn't accept the money. 

 

Now four men are in custody. One is an influential former volunteer believed to be involved in loan sharking. 

 

The one minute video was posted on "Hi So Shop" where comment was rife. 

 

The four men arrived in a white pick-up and grabbed a man who is the son of the owner of a seafood restaurant. He was named only as "Tae".

 

He had been attending the ordination of a friend at the temple of Wat Noi Nai in Taling Chan district of Bangkok. 

 

As the men made good their getaway they pointed guns at people and fired into the air. "Tae" was roughed up and suffered head injuries, reported Daily News. 

 

However, Facebook chat soon revealed that the armed men had got the wrong person. 

 

They attempted to buy off the relatives with 40,000 baht but the relatives went to Taling Chan police. 

 

Now four men are in custody charged with abduction, assault, threatening behavior and weapons violations. 

 

One is said to be an influential former volunteer official who is mixed up in a loan shark business.

That was my first thought... not the best vehicle type (sliding door people carrier better)... and the guys swinging their arms around weren't even looking in the direction they were pointing. No attempt at disguise. Whoever hired them perhaps didn't do a rehearsal to see how (in)effective they were.

to man's family,not to report to police and give him back ?, surely

this would only happen in Thailand, Kidnappers paying to give victim back,

I could see that happening if they ever kidnapped my wife !

That's exactly what I was saying, but been criticized for saying that. The violence is getting out of control and it happens way too often. People are just going mental for whatever reasons they have. It's a sad state of matters.

The violence has always been there.  The difference is the proliferation of dash cams, CCTV and online video channels.

 

Not necessarily a bad thing if even "influential volunteers" can't buy or intimidate themselves out of trouble because the evidence is so in your face.
