Valentine's Day: Thais more concerned about STDs at "curtain hotels" than roses and chocolates

Results of a poll announced on the eve of Valentine's Day showed that Thais are more concerned about getting sexually transmitted diseases than roses and chocolates.

A "Super Poll" asked 1299 people nationwide from all walks of life about their attitudes to the "Day of Love" and the dangers associated with it.

Asked what came to mind at the mention of "Valentine's" just over 60% said it brought to mind true love, kindness - all the lovely fuzzy stuff.

But 21% said they associated the word with sex.

And 13.5% thought of condoms as well as things like flowers.

Asked where the greatest dangers await young people on Valentine's, 39% mentioned Thailand's notorious short time sex hotels - "maan root" or cutain hotels in Thai.

Some 22% thought of entertainment venues, 16% public parks, 9% schools and unis and nearly 6% movie theaters.

Daily News said this was of considerable concern but of GREAT concern was that just over half of the population worried about getting sexually transmitted diseases on the big day and that 59.3% mentioned children and young people as medium to seriously at risk.

But the largely Buddhist Thais still put the event into perspective, notes Thaivisa.

Nearly 86% reckoned that the Buddhist holiday of Mahakhabucha was more important than Valentine's Day.

And only 14% put love above religion.

It is actually Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on February 14.

Nice to see all these Buddhist celebrating it. Too bad they don't realize it.

Thai Buddhist are very versatile - but only when it suits their agenda....

Perhaps our countries should consider picking up on all those Buddhist and Thai holidays, too. Just consider:

Asanha Bucha -- 1 day off work

Maha Bucha -- 1 day off work

Songkran -- 5 days off work

Khao Pansa -- claim you're Buddhist and just take off for the day "to visit the temple"

Awk Pansa -- same procedure as Khao Pansa

Loy Krathong -- hope it falls on a weekday so you can get 1 day off work

And the best thing is it doesn't really matter whether you know why these Buddhist holidays actually do exist and for what purpose (other than take off work, of course).

Most of these "days" only relate to those in "salaried" employment and  school children. The remainder still generally continue to eke out a living regardless.

Bonus days  for the saffron  mafia!

But if it is true that STD's are a significant consideration then who can be critical of that ?

The only Christmas tree in our village was the one my Buddhist wife bought. And it wasn't in order to appease me in any way. I'm atheist and she knows it.

So figure that one out!
