UK seeks to attract high-skilled workers with points-based immigration system

I guess backwards looking England will still be able to lure in talents, quite like Saudi Arabia does. The salaries should be 5 figures per month to do so.

Good salary and ability not to have to live along with the poor Englishmen, would be a good for the England's recruitment process.

I'm a fan of these points systems. Probably because when I've checked I pass all of them with a fat margin. They make sense, just get the best in and others stay where they are until they've developed themselves to pass the muster. No need to get any fillers in just to increase the body count.

Well as long as you are ok.

I also pass the tests but its stupid to have them as it pushes costs up.

Also housing industry hates them.

I dont vote for my own good, i vote for what is best for my country.

What does @DannyCarlton think?

IMO their country, up to them.

They give Thai people retirement visa? 50+ year old and 20,000 UK dollar?

So...did we become more competitive in any area? To me it looks like more and more "houses and holes"

Sorry you are mistaken.  Many flaws and limitations in the way the Australian System works.  Best to avoid it.  Concept looks good but the execution and delivery not so good.

Australia has had a similar points system for years. Works well.

Yes, beautiful Nongkai woman. He is very lucky. They go karaoke together.

But I ask him about the quote, not about his wife.....

What about Thai wives of retired UK citizens, many of such wives having no skills?  It was hard enough obtaining a visitor visa for my wife, so I guess she will never be allowed to reside in UK. ????

Exactly, as many British retirees living in Thailand voted for.

The UK conservative government is being active in forcing the lazy and workshy to get employment through various means such as proving they have actively sought work, not left jobs for petty reasons, attended interviews etc. and taking action against those who don't by censoring their benefits and suspending their benefits.

At least they are doing something about it and I support them. Regarding home grown labour not really wanting minimum wages jobs, the answer is easy. Get to college or an apprenticeship and acquire a skill where you don't have to work for minimum wage.

It has to be addressed and the Labour party addresses nothing. As Thatcher once said, ' The problem with socialism is you eventually run out of other peoples money '

People who have worked all their lives resent the workshy sponging a life on benefits whilst moonlighting doing various work for cash only and paying no taxes, whilst the rest of us see the age for retirement raised to 67, to pay for this lot.

Many non-socialist governments tried so, none succeeded.

As the German media complex already starts to hysterical condemn Johnson's immigration plans they cannot be bad for his country.

Germany has been an occupied country for many years now.  It does not act in the interests of its citizens.

Good move from the UK.

Many highly specialised IT, engineering institutions, medical colleges etc. etc.  in the EU are rightfully letting non EU students come to study, who are brillant,  and when they get their degrees or PhD, they are asked to leave !!!

Stupidity from the EU after having trained some of top the brains of the globe, are loosing valuable professionnals who exceed in their specialisations. Most end up happily in the firms of Sillicon Valley or in top class specialised institutions in Switzerland.

As an American, I can only hope that the US will see this and use it to screen migrators (immigrants), but leave the illegal Latins alone UNLESS they catch them for criminal offences --- THEN Deport them....

Where I live in California many friends and neighbors are hard working illegals, it is only 'a few of their own' that spoil it.... Very few, percentage wise....

However I dislike what I see of muslim immigrants coming into so many countries and trying to convert those 'host' countries to muslim rule (law).   I DON'T WANT THEM...... (period)

(muslim intentionally not capitalized)

A look at which sectors of the economy are short of worker’s is enough to reveal this ‘bureaucracy creating idea’ will fail:

Construction facing worker shortages since 2014, hotels catering, health and welfare, and others all short of workers.

Oh and Wetherspoon facing a profit warning ( sad that).

Whenever I see "shortage of workers", I always read "<deleted> wages".  Or, sometimes... "cyclical employment where employees are tired of being laid off repeatedly".

So the UK wants 'highly skilled' immigrants like engineers and IT specialists who can speak English?

GOOD NEWS - India and Pakistan produce these graduates in vast numbers (1.5 million engineering graduates a year in India). Even better news - most cannot find employment in their own countries (80% of engineers unemployed in India) and are immediately available to take up positions in the UK....
