I suspect cases of Corvid-19 are low because hospitals aren’t testing everyone/anyone that comes in with the symptoms, I mean, it’s normal for Thai people to clog up the hospitals when they have a cold, cough etc, there’s no way Thailand has the kits or the manpower to suddenly start testing them all. I think it’ll only start showing up on stats when a significant amount of people start going down with ARDS.

That has the ring of authenticity about it. Something sure as hell doesn't gel that's for sure and I'm not sure how much of it has to do with the collapse of tourism. I'd be surprised if the good General hasn't been talking to a few people... tourism is probably the one thing which might impel him to read the writing that is surely on the wall...

It seems WHO has two reference laboratories in Thailand, at Chula and National Instutite of Health, both of which need to execute a RT-PCR test on a sample and confirm a positive. Ministry of Public Health, lead by Anutin, runs the NIH lab. MoPH stopped publishing the number of pending diagnoses days ago, but until then they were growing hand by hand with suspected cases, indicating either the testing is very slow (I've seen multiple mentions of RT-PCR tests taking 24-48/h to complete, there was also a video from Chula's lab here on TVF, throughput seemed to be under 10 diagnoses per day when they were still publishing the backlog) or one of the labs is not confirming new cases.

 

Not that hard to read between the lines.

With the level of social media activity in Thailand, they would never be able to keep it covered up. The authorities in Thailand, unlike China, do not have control over what people can post. And even in China with the vast social media controls in place, information is still coming out. If the infection levels were like that in Thailand, you would not see anything else online.

That's what public health specialists have been saying for some time. There is absolutely no way that Thailand with the millions of Chinese visitors that it had received would have fewer cases than countries which received a fraction of the Chinese visitors. Common sense says there should be more cases.

You are missing the BIG picture. Your excerpt is a small excerpt of the event. You are missing the part where he was politely questioned about Thailand's data. In effect   he was told that the  world's experts believe that Thailand  has under reported and misrepresented its data.

The initial tests are now chest xrays. If they do not see the telltale clouding, the patient is cleared. The test kits are being rationed. More importantly, Thailand is notorious for unreliable   live samples. So many things can go wrong here;

- The samples must be kept at 2-4C, and we all know  the quality of  refrigeration in Thailand.

- Thailand is relying on swabs. Well, those swabs must be  specially  built with a synthetic tip (i.e. not cotton) and the shaft must be intert like polished aluminum and not the common bamboo  or  low qyality wood fiber used in Thailand. It also depends where the sample is taken (throat, lung sputum etc.)

I agree with you that people need to stop fear mongering. 

In case you forgot, thailand has threatened people with prison  if they say anything questionable and has already made some examples of people. As well,  Thailand uses  software censoring programs. People are scared in large part because the information provided is unreliable. Also, many Thai people don't know any better and are quite willing to accept something if the  guy in uniform or monk outfit tells them.

 

It is IMPOSSIBLE that the number of cases confirmed are as low as they are for the simple reason that we know that  infected carriers entered Thailand.

The Minister erodes his credibility when he uses terms such as "cure" because there is no "cure". people recover.  Recovered people  will most likely have some tissue damage, i.e. impaired respiratory systems  because a respiratory illnesses damages the tissue. if healthy enough they may repair the damage over time. If not, they will succumb to other ailments.  This too is common knowledge and is seen with other less  lethal illnesses.

The Minister is a cringe worthy embarrassment and unfit for this very important  job.

If the Prime Minister cares about thailand he will  appoint  someone with a sound grasp of management and logistics planning to oversee the response. Thailand needs to ramp up its  acute care system now.

However, the issue here is not the eating habits of Thais as there are also many who are vegetarians or who are ethical eaters. Thailand is a country of 70 million, even if only  10% are  humane and ethical, that is still 7 million good and decent people who deserve respect.

 

The same applies for this health crisis. There are responsible health professionals in Thailand. Unfortunately they are not allowed to manage the crisis as they need to do. they are persecuted, discriminated against and maligned. Not everyone is an ignorant prejudiced person like the Minister.  Thailand once earned  the world's respect when it led the way in managing its HIV crisis. Then those professionals were tossed aside as HIV was bad for business. We are seeing the same scenario play out with Covid 19.  Let the health professionals do what they need to do and stop obsessing over the Chinese  revenue.

With 3000 Chinese coming in and out everyday I don't believe there are only 35 cases the rest of the World don't believe it either.
Doesn't mean the situation is out of control, doesn't mean there are thousands of cases but certainly more than 35, doesn't mean people dropping dead in the street.
If there were 100 cases they could easily cover them up report them as suspect but not confirmed.
Just tell the truth why have to cover up to protect Tourism that's already down the drain.
