Army chief orders study of ‘lone wolf’ behaviour

Pelted with questions about how to prevent the emergence of “lone wolves” in the military like the sergeant-major who went on a murderous shooting spree in Nakhon Ratchasima this month, the Army’s commander has ordered Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) to examine cases like it and find out what motivates them.

Deputy commander General Nattaphon Narkphanit on Wednesday (February 19) used the term “lone wolf” normally associated with terrorists unaffiliated with any organisation in reporting that General Apirat Kongsompong had ISOC studying the matter.

“We’ve studied this behaviour in the past, under the National Council for Peace and Order,” he said, referring to the military junta that staged the 2014 coup, “but it received no attention because no such incidents occurred.”

Nattaphon said the Army wants to know what can be done to prevent such incidents in the future and will consult experts on the matter.

He also asked the public to show patience and understand that the Army is deeply regretful about what happened in Korat.

“There were only a few soldiers involved in the incident,” he said, apparently also referring to the Army camp security personnel who failed to stop the sergeant from obtaining the assault rifle used in the mass killing.

“And yet more than 200,000 Army personnel and their families have been condemned by words and actions.”

I imagine there are many such studies, but of course, Thais are unique so they don't apply. Look west to America for psych studies, in America, the 'lone wolf' misfit gunman is quite common and would be relatively well understood. People are people, even Thais.

I'll take a wild guess and suggest, frustration brought on by repeated unjust and unfair treatment by their superiors. Something is going to give.

Indeed, perhaps a study of the underlying bullying mentality of Thais ought to be the subject of a study, and that goes right back to 'face'. Thai culture is the culprit in this instance, but again, people are people and generally similar. Thais are very far from being unique, you can see a microcosm of Thailand in most Western schools with students aged 10-14 years old. Also, other countries will have their own version of 'face', which is doubtless already well understood.

Thais have to lose this nonsensical idea that they are somehow unique. They're not, they're people, and not very smart people at that. Not so hard to understand them - fear is a large part of the Thai psyche.

It is simple to Promoted to the Rank of silliness General.

<deleted> off soldier , had the means and the wherewithal to do what he did. So he did it. Military like the Police promoted to the level of incompetence and then stupid questions to justify existence . No wonder there is a problem coupled with the sheer arrogance of Senior officers to other ranks .

No need to consult experts.

it will be enough to suppress the conscription and to have an army of trade made up of professionals correctly paid and treated with equity.

But it is certainly too much to ask;
oh yes, and then delete all the thousands of junk generals who don't even know how to hold a weapon properly ...

Oh I don't know. I'm sure those generals know how to how a weapon properly, most people seem to think they're all tossers.

Then there is the case of a colonel that lives the neighborhood. Twice he has been committed, in a military hospital,  for treatment of his "bipolar" condition. He promises to keep up on his meds!

I always wonder who he is constantly talking with, from the time he opens his front door, until he goes back in, or leaves to head to the base.

We have had 2 neighbors move because they fear him.

You don't need to hold a weapon to get your nose nice and brown... well, not a metal or plastic one anyway.

Why don’t they read the studies that have already been written?  I’m starting to think that they think they are not human.  They always do their own studies, and they have no expertise.  All the studies done in Thailand have been done before.  Save time and effort by reading other’s literature ????

Didn’t it? I thought a lone wolf illegally used military weapons to overthrow the government and seize power.

Study all you like, wont make any difference, corruption/ abuse/ ill treatment of juniors is rife.

Until soldiers are treated properly it will continue.

I agree...and not just soldiers.
In this economy and culture, corruption, cheating people out of money and abuse of power is playing with fire.  People that are on a short fuse are going to want revenge.
