The chief of police in Bang Bua Thong, Nonthaburi, north west of Bangkok has hit back at claims that one of his men kicked a motorcyclist off his bike.

 

The 28 year old man was fleeing a checkpoint at the time.

 

Pisanu died after coming off his Honda Wave. He suffered head injuries after mounting the footpath and hitting his head on signage on the Bang Kruay to Sai Noi Road.

 

A friend who was with him called Sasina said that he and the victim had been at a shop buying alcohol. After this they came to a police checkpoint and Pisanu turned back against traffic and was then kicked off his bike and killed by the police.

 

Chief Pol Col Siraphop Anusiri said that none of his men kicked the deceased off his bike.

 

He said there were three bikes one of which turned back and tried to flee causing the officers to reposition their checkpoint to stop him.

 

He killed himself trying to flee, he said.

We’ve seen enough videos of Police in Thailand kicking people who don’t stop off their bikes. 

 

So I don’t believe for a second the BiB did nothing. 

 

However, another facet is how else are the police supposed to stop people trying to flee a check-point?

 

If trying to flee a check-point these guys are obviously up to no good, drunk etc, down the line they could injure or kill and innocent pedestrian.

 

So, in this case its possible an innocent was protected by the actions of the Police, something we’ll never know. 

 

Unfortunately the deceased made his own bed, he crossed and line and paid for it with their life. 

 

Reckless endangerment by the Police? probably. Unwarranted? maybe not.

I have seen them do it with my own eyes more than once, so denying police do it doesn't work with me. There is a depth of stupidity beyond belief when they do it especially to those who aren't wearing a helmet. They know the dangers as people have died from exactly this before, so the cop should be charged with murder, pure and simple.

Why are ‘innocent’ motorcyclists trying to avoid the check-point in the first place??? Answer: They are not innocent, they are drunk, methed up, carrying drugs, unlicensed etc etc...  

 

Taking these guys off the road at these check points protects the rest of us. In theory anyway, the unfortunately reality is that many of the check-points are measures for opportunistic shake-downs, the drunk pays a nominal bribe fee and is on his way.

[devils advocate] That drunk or methed up rider (who was also carrying Meth XD) avoiding the check point may have been the guy who hits and injures you when he rides on the pavement you are walking down, or the guy selling meth to your friends son etc.... You’ll never know, but one thing is for sure, they should have stopped when told to do so.

Most of the time kicking and knocking someone of his bike at low speed dons;t cause much damage this time however the poor guy knocked his head against sign and other hard surfaces, so now guys pull out the cheque book and pay compensation and next time think before you kick someone else of his bike...

Some months ago the police in London were knocking motorcyclists/thieves off their mounts in order to arrest them.

Whatever the rights & wrongs of it, I got the impression that the general public didn't have too much of a problem with it, after becoming sick & tired of lawlessness & crime in London.

Don't jumpt to conclusions it is entirely possible poor thais avoid the checkpoints because they may not have money for a helmet or they simply may not have a helmet and 500 baht is a lot of money to many of them.  How long have you lived here?

What will happen in other countries if you try to flee a checkpoint?

In the  US, they'll shoot you I guess and in Germany they will send a brigade of social pedagogues after you.

Ten years ago in Udon I saw first-hand a policeman grabbing hold of a motorcycle passenger's arm and pulling them both down.

There was a daytime helmet checkpoint set up and neither of the two teenagers were wearing helmets. The driver skirted around the first cop who signalled them to stop. They sped off further along the road in the city centre, at which point the next cop pulled them down.

The motorcycle slid across the main road towards the oncoming traffic. Fortunately it stopped before it hit anything.

A few years ago when Purchasing a Yamaha scooter I was given a relatively decent helmet. 

The plastic Big-C lids are useless. IMO it should be the responsibility of the Motorcycle dealers to issue helmets with every new bike; that doesn’t solve the issue, but it helps. 

 

But the real point is [regarding helmets] effective policing is the only way to ensure all people wear helmets, stopping helmet less riders and having check-points is one facet of this policing, the BiB should be doing more, riding around and stopping everyone visibly flouting the traffic regulations.

But Thailand is never inspired by the positive things done by the farang.
They are too proud

Sorry to the family for the loss of a loved one,but if he pulled up and just coped the fine he would still be alive.

So many scenarios in a situation like this,was he drunk,was he carrying drugs,was he unlicensed. The biggest issue I have here is,if he had killed and innocent person,would he have stopped or run like he did at the checkpoint. It was his choice in that situation to run and paid the price.

Italy has changed a lot since I lived and worked there in the 70s and 80s;
I have never seen a checkpoint there unless you call a police checkpoint at the motorways tolls ...
