Modern as in 20th century European..... Where I spend a lot of my time up in Scotland, the line is largely single track between Fort William and the Glasgow side of loch Lomond with only a few passing spots. I've only taken the train a few times as I usually drive, but a couple of times the train has had to stop and back up because there's another train coming the other way. Signal failure and or driver error happens frequently in the UK even in the 21st century, it seldom makes the news unless a couple of trains bump into each other. BobinBKK
I'm surprised they didn't blame this one on GPS. Maybe give it a day or two and they will ????

MaxYakov
The trains were running on time (into each other).
