A former policeman who was arrested after committing a burglary in his home district of Sanpatong, Chiang Mai, has escaped from custody.

A hunt is now on for the fugitive.

Pawaret was arrested at the weekend and held at Sanpatong police station but subsequently taken to the local hospital because he had suffered injuries after an attack by a furious mob at the site of his latest burglary.

He was secured to his hospital bed by cuffs on his foot but managed to get away in the early hours of the morning, get a lift on a motorcycle and flee the scene.

He was dressed in a long sleeve shirt and shorts and had had his beard shaved and his hair matted down for an operation.

Police are studying CCTV but believe he will not have gone far.

Naew Na reported that Pawaret achieved the rank of police corporal but was drummed out of the service after embezzlement in a drugs case.

He then turned to a life of crime and apart from the latest burglary had warrants out against his name in three other cases.

In the latest case an item of gold jewelry was recovered. He was attacked by locals and arrested by Sanpatong police.
