A staffer at Mahidol University is under close scrutiny for Covid-19 infection after showing symptoms such as fever within 14 days of returning from a country that has a high infection rate, the university said in a statement.

Professor Banjong Mahaisawiriya, acting president of the university, said in the statement on Tuesday (February 25): “The university is monitoring the staff closely and is awaiting lab test confirmation from Ministry of Public Health. We also have called in other staff who have made contact with the suspected patient and to test them thoroughly.”

University staff and students who have no direct relationship with the person have been urged them to take care of their health and follow the guidelines of the Ministry of Public Health and Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation to protecting themselves against the coronavirus.

Banjong did not disclose which department or faculty the suspected case is from.

Co-workers at places like Mahidol and PTT are taking to social media to raise concerns, which means the "authorities" need to acknowledge at least a possibility of a CV19 infection at these places.

Would be nice if they named the country?

If the government named the country, that might show a chink in their armour.

Ok start your stopwatch, the sample has been sent to NIH lab. If they ever do follow up, we'll then know how long the processing time was.

Their own instructions state less than one hour to do the procedure, I do not know how long it takes to prepare a sample.

If it's days, then you can imagine there's a bottleneck.

Call me pessimistic but I cannot see realistically how this virus can be contained, having already spread so far and with an incubation period of 14+ days. Buckle your seats everyone ????

Amulets? Animal sacrifices? Fortune tellers? Hot weather? Strong wind? Virus cures?

Always look on the bright side of life.

The list of possible candidates keeps getting longer by the day...

But these days, Japan and South Korea and Singapore are probably good candidates.  I think not many Thais have been taking voluntary trips to China lately....

There will be no delay with Mahidol. It is hiso central, with all the elite's children on campus. This will be settled in a "fitting" manner in short order.

The are unconfirmed news yet that the virus is spreading and fast in Don Muang area. Later news might confirm it.

What reports, confirmed or unconfirmed - or is it just scare mongering?

The "normal" processing times should be hours, it has taken some time to do the article so I reckon we should have the results already. Let's see.

Mahidol itself has a level 2 biosafety lab, but perhaps not the materials or equipment to check for SARS-CoV-2.

That's a great idea, so anyone who might have had contact with this University/faculty doesn't know whether to be worried or not?

Disclose everything and let people take the necessary action!

No No No, keep it quiet so people don't get worried, Thai logic in full swing.

Working & living in Thailand for many years, it appears to me this situation is bringing out the worst of the ill-informed, gossipy and self-serving aspects of Thai culture. Many are 'massively offended/concerned' but do nothing to manage this, the <deleted> air quality or approx 2,000 road deaths since January 1st 2020.

Well, we're fortunate Covid 19 can't drive and doesn't know how to use a box of matches then.

Thanks for the link, but it doesn't say that. Thailand is riskiest country, sure, but DMK is fourth and BKK is the 6th riskiest airport - outside China.

True, mainland China was treated as the origin, regardless of the originating airport. Anyhow the basic idea is the same: DMK is riskier than BKK. Probably because of a lot of cheaper flights going there.

Thailand is also identified as a major spreader for allowing Chinese during the early stages of outbreak to avoid travel bans by taking allowing them to use Thai airports onto destinations which had banned them.

And this will cost Thais the rest of their beloved tourism. Nobody fancies getting stuck in a country or facing two week quarantine upon return after a holiday, when countries add Thailand to their high risk lists.
