This time they referred glowingly to the "power of immigration". The now infamous BMW smart car was on patrol in the area of the Kathu waterfall in Phuket. A check on a foreigner there using the onboard diagnostics revealed he was on overstay of more than a year. Mr A.W. from South Africa had outstayed his welcome in the kingdom by 479 days and was handed over to the Kathu police. Naew Na quoted a Phuket immigration officer as saying this was all part of Immigration Bureau chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang's policy to rid Thailand of illegal foreigners. They urged the public to continue to report infractions on the 1178 hotline. Naew Na - whose reports on these cases are little more than templates - referred to immigration as "khiaw lep" that equates to having power or ability.
