Most of the smoke and haze is blowing in from Cambodia with light easterly winds. All schools under the supervision of the BMA will close until Friday. Air quality in the capital has worsened over the past few days with Bangkok recurring the world’s 5th worst air pollution yesterday (today it is 10th). The forecast is for light winds and poor air circulation which will compound the accumulation of PM2.5 dust and smoke particles. While efforts have been made to reduce pollution in the capital, the poor air quality in Thailand has been blamed on plantation burn-offs from sugar, corn and rice fields in the central, north and north-east of Thailand, plus easterly airflows blowing in the same burn-off smoke from Cambodian farms. Back in the city, district officials and municipal police will patrol open areas to make sure there is no burning outdoors, while city workers will spray water in the air and on roads to wash away dust. Pollution was bad to begin with The wild fires only exacerbate it It is still bad. It effects the people and the Thai economy as well as tourism. It isn't the road sides being burnt by government workers all along the highways of my province. It isn't the acres of sugar cane being burnt even now as I type then. It isn't the massive sugar factory just down the road with smoke belching from the chimney stack. It isn't the local taxis and old trucks with the black smoke then? It isn't the ancient trucks used to transport the burnt sugar can then. No .............. Oh, that's alright then. Over towards the Chachoengsao side there were at least 10 big plumes of smoke going way up into the air. It looked like a military strike had occurred. Nation’s all over the world have built their economies upon these “Trade Winds”. My location ... 30 Km inland from Pattaya The Air Quality is really bad when the wind direction is North East / East When the wind is South Westerly the Air is reasonably good. About a Month back a NASA Satellite mapped 150 " Hot Spots " in Thailand .. Fires. The same satellite on the same pass over mapped 960 " Hot Spots " in Cambodia. True! This should in fact be considered an act of war!???? BTW- stroke is the leading cause of death in Thailand (10.7%), followed by ischemic heart disease (7.8%) Average life span just over 70.
