Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha told members of parliament, on the final scheduled day of the censure debate, that the Defence Ministry is determined to reform the military by downsizing the three armed forces to become more efficient and modern, with the aim of cutting the number of generals in half by the year 2028.

OK, jumped into my time machine....went forwarded to 31 Dec 2028....took a picture of how good the "...with the aim..." worked out...took a picture.

But with only half who will run the government?  and he might not have time to write anymore beautiful songs anyway Prayut won't be there in 8 years and most of us wish he wasn't there in 8 months. Prime Ministers should always get elected by the PEOPLE first.

Once again the master bu++shi++er is up to his usual.

Why would it take 8 years to cut the amount of generals in half?

It could be done in months if wanted.

An expert on the military as well as everything else are you? Did you read the title of this post before descending into your usual hysteria? Getting rid of the generals is part of the DOWNSIZING of the military, something that cannot happen over night.  You clearly have no concept of how an army works.

An army consists of a structure of different elements. As one element is downsized others follow accordingly otherwise the system collapses. It's not all about infantry and tanks (or submarines for the Navy for those that can't drop that bone) its about all the other bits of the puzzle. Do it overnight and chaos ensues.

As of 2019 there were 41 Admirals in the British Royal Navy and 40 capital ships- this is not just an issue for Thailand.

Most militaries are top heavy- its not just about boots on the ground its about things like Defence Attaches in Embassies and all sort of other stuff.

Why not accept that they are finally being open about starting to address the problem instead of seeing the negative in everything?

You are of course quite right. The problem here is trust ... Whereas we can trust the British Admiralty (at least I hope so), we cannot trust neither the seriousness, the willingness not the capability of the local Junta to abide by their words or policies as long as it runs the country. Restore civilian rules is a priority. Let a democratically elected civilian government impose a return of the army to their barracks, cancel their political status, and then reduce its numbers. Wonder what the stripes would think about such decisions. As long as a Junta runs a country (not just Thailand) its words will never be trusted.

Cut in half within 8 years 555555 , and in those 8 years those 60 to 70 year old generals can fill their pockets till the rim and have a s...load of pensionmoney that they cannot even spend anymore in their lifetime . I geuss those generals will vote for him to stay in power . He's using his power very well for somebody that doesn't want it .

Easy for him to say. He knows the army will be out of power, and out of the picture in 8 years time. Just more lies and deflection from an administration that has redefined the concept of insincerity. Those generals are about as useful as a downhill racing team in Thailand. They do nothing for the nation and the people. Get them out now. Get the army out now.

WOW now that is unusual.

usually all ex-military leaders will tell how the army needs more budget

and more weapons and more and more and more...even if only to

defend their friends in the army.

salut, Mr. Genenral Prayuth !

Not so, he needs less people that might oppose his "Loyal" army....... Remember this guy lives on an army base and i can bet my bottom dollar that none of that base or its security will be reduced..... He's just cutting down the capability of another take over bid.......

Still one half too many.

Sure, remove half of the remaining half and still more than most other countries comparatively.

And while your at it PM if you really want to build democratic process then downsize the number of senior officers who are appointed, not elected to the senate. Downsize by 100%, not by half.

Hmmm. He talks of downsizing the three services, but increasing efficiency and modernization. He talks of halving the amount of generals.

Didn't see any comments about the budget though.

Politicians tricks.
