Covid-19: "Bangkok is not shutdown" says DPM as he gives language lesson

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-Ngam has told the Thai press not to refer to Bangkok as having been shutdown.

And the legal expert has given reporters a lesson in the meaning and usage of several Thai words.

The DPM's statement came after entertainment venues in the capital were ordered shut for 14 days.

Wissanu, dressed in pink with a face mask, is a jurist well known for his careful choice of words.

He said that using "shutdown" from English was too much - the Thai word "pit" (closed) was short and fitting even though that word still needed clarification.

He went on to say that referring to Buriram and Uthai Thani provinces as "closed" was not right as all they were doing was instigating measures similar to Bangkok's main airport of Suvarnabhumi in controlling the spread of Covid-19.

Wissanu also sought to explain the term "sathan borikan" in relation to the kinds of establishments ordered closed in Bangkok for 14 days until the end of the month.

Thaivisa notes that the term has a general meaning of "service or entertainment venue" but is often used when referring to places of prostitution.

Wissanu said that legally it refers to pubs, clubs, bars, hotels, ab ob nuat (soapy massage) and traditional Thai massage.

All of these have been ordered shut but not hotels. He indicated that some hotels have soapy massage or traditional massage attached.

It was unclear whether they would need to shut down completely or just close their massage wings, notes Thaivisa.

Wissanu said that restaurants and beauty salons remained open for business as they were not "sathan borikan".

if he doesn't like the word shut down, why not use some synonyms as confined, cutoff, halt...and so many more but they all mean the city is not working at full capacity, thus restricted from normal activities/social events

Is he smoking crack.  So lets see, Boxing stadiums, racecourses, and sports stadiums in Bangkok and its vicinity will be closed temporarily. Pubs, entertainment places, traditional Thai massage shops, fitness centers, spas, and theaters in Bangkok and its perimeter will be closed for 14 days.

I guess closed temporarily for 14 days, is not SHUTDOWN in his eyes or his vocabulary.  Have they not been shutdown for 14days........

He is like us French who do not know all the subtleties of the English language;
A little Google search could have provided him with the missing word (s)?

Notice the report says that Bangkok has not been shutdown - and it hasn't.

Maybe you need some help with your comprehension. Only certain types of establishment closed for 14 days - which is not a complete shutdown.

I do not need a semantics lesson from you Baerboxer.  Nowhere in my post did I say a complete shutdown of Bangkok.  I listed what was temporarily closed or SHUTDOWN for 14 days and that's what is shutdown. In your view Temporarily Closed is not Shutdown. Are they open for business, have they the means to be operational, are they making money, no they are Shut for business at the direction of the government, so they are SHUTDOWN.  I suggest you learn to look at the big picture sir.

Self imposed lock down, when my wife gets home, neither of us will be going out for several days.

She had to go to school this morning sort a few things out.

On her way home she will get me a few loaves of bread, everything else we have plenty.

Nobody will get in the gate, good excuse to keep the outlaws away.:cheesy:????

What happens if you get a flat tyre?  ????

Be very interesting to see how they handle this... for example...

In BKK, there are many hotels that have....

--restaurants

--a pub (bar)/restaurant

--a massage shop

Will the massage shops and pubs in hotels be closed, while the hotel and its restaurants remain open?   Or, will the massage shops and pubs inside hotels get a pass because they're in hotels and not standalone?

Are Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy really going to be entirely closed down for at least two week?  And give up all those envelopes stuffed full of cash?

The Landmark Hotel in BKK has the Huntsman Pub in the basement. It's called a "pub," but it's just as much a restaurant that also serves drinks. Will it be closed or remain open?

Well he's got a face mask, not sure he's actually "wearing" it ???

Oh, yes! No doubt he is wearing it. Just not in the right place to make it an effective type of protection. :cheesy: But he is still and good jurist that knows how to give language lessons.

That sounds good. Take care! Myself, I will spend a lot of time on the computer and look a lot of movies. Take a couple of beers and stay home. That´s the only sensible thing to do.

Public transport still running, business houses (except entertainment, pubs and massage parlors) remain open . So not a shutdown

give him credit for trying.  bangkok is not wuhan.

lots of doomporn on the innertubes these days, clickbait "journalists" using irresponsible language in their headlines.

saying bangkok or any city is "shut down" gives the impression they're experiencing the zombie apocalypse, with thousands infected, hundreds dying daily.  that's not the case here.  this is just a case of temporary closures of certain locales as a preventative measure.

Are you going to be operating a 'shoot on sight' policy regarding them?

Well if you close everything what attracts people coming to bangkok in the first place. How would you call it?

Or do you think people come to see Bangkok's traffic lights, or the world famous pedestrian crossings?

Then perhaps we should call it Bangnokok.

It's a capital city, with very few tourists at this time. There are a lot of people work in Bangkok, they like to eat, drink, have a massage even, usual human pursuits, They don't "come" to Bangkok, they live there. ????
