LONDON (Reuters) - Britain has asked 65,000 former nurses and doctors to return to work and will deploy final-year medical students to fight the coronavirus health crisis, the health ministry said.

As the coronavirus outbreak sweeps across the world, governments, companies and investors are grappling with the biggest public health crisis since the 1918 influenza pandemic, panicked populations and imploding financial markets.

Final year medical students and student nurses are also being offered the chance to take temporary roles to boost the NHS frontline even further.

"We can’t do it alone, so I am urging all recent former nurses to lend us your expertise and experience during this pandemic, because I have no doubt that you can help to save lives," said Ruth May, chief nursing officer for England.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council is writing out to more than 50,000 nurses whose registration has lapsed in the last three years. The General Medical Council will write to another 15,500 doctors who have left the register since 2017.

Britain's health service is freeing up 30,000 beds by postponing non-urgent operations and providing care in the community for those who are fit to be discharged, and finding up to 10,000 in independent and community hospitals, the health service said.

Double actually. EU staff leaving because of perceived post-Brexit hostility and massive Tory cuts in NHS staffing.

maybe they retired or found better lifestyle jobs, but to come back they would need to re-register/qualify

My youngest daughter is a biomedical scientist in the NHS (blood/tissue analysis, stuff like that). She is telling me things are absolutely desperate. Big shortage of staff, shortage of the most basic things like swabs, sample tubes, pipettes etc.

Best wishes to her and all her colleagues - never have we loved them more and expected so much of them. They will be cheered like never before in our history. And every other countries healthcare workers as well. Richard Branson and the other rich scumbags with greedy hands already stretched out for bailouts have got a great reckoning coming and soon.

Nurses have been pictured wearing clinical waste bags on their heads at Northwick Park hospital, which declared an emergency on Thursday when it ran out of critical care beds

Filipina nurses in the UK are forced to wear bin bags as the intensive care unit closes?

What could go wrong?

Great start from the "irony", anti Brexit gang and other usual moaners here.

The plea is directed at retired doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, British or from wherever. Several had already volunteered their services and many more will re-register. These selfless and dedicated people know the seriousness of this situation and should be applauded now, whether they can re-register or not. Obviously they know that the NHS will be swamped. There was a report on Irish doctors repatriating back home in a hurry for the same reason. Good on 'em.

NHS recruitment ads are running between all major UK TV streams seen of late inc the offer of a GBP 5k grant/incentive (I can't recall exact details) to attract young trainees looking for a career.

I agree; The usual culprits are having a field day at HMG's efforts to thwart this crisis, but would it have been any better in the hands of a Corbyn led Govt or if Bercow & Co had succeeded in scuppering B-B-B....?
