pdtokyo 557
Asian shops (supermarkets, food store type places) usually sell a range of phone cards ... $10 or something buys you credit ... you dial the local number on the card and then enter the Thai number (or Chinese or Malay ... whatever). Don't need to fiddle with phone or uinstal anything ... your friend only needs minimal skills. Phone card company usually makes it easy to put one or both numbers into a sort of 'speed dial' setting so that makes it even easier. Credit is usually based on call time i.e so much per minute. Amount of credit you get depends on country ... Asia cheap ... Africa not. Downside is these companies exist by buying up spare capacity and on-selling it, so at busy times the call quality may not be 100%. Poor quality call? hang up and try again usually works. Consistently poor quality? Try another card. Good luck.

OP ... LINE is super-easy to instal and offers free calls/video via their internet connection. Edited March 26, 2020 by pdtokyo stacks of emojis too!
Bruce Aussie Chiang Mai 1426
Simple if they have android phone download Skype app. You buy a yearly worldwide subscription. I have had for 7 years now. Pay just over $100 aust per year. You give them your password you can still both use same time if you wish. When they don't need anymore change password. No need for anyone you call to have Skype, can call any mobile or landline worldwide as long as you have internet access. SMS are not included and require Skype credit unless messaging Skype to Skype. My wife hammers it and I use to call Australia everyday. ❤Skype worldwide subscription. couchpotato 343
Just have them (and you if you don't have already) either Line or Viber. Both are free calls (normal or video). So easy, why screw with other ways.
