Customs office

Hi, Im new to this but hoping someone can help!    I sent a parcel to my son who is living on Koh Phangan and on tracking it found out that it is being held at the distribution office awaiting payment but it dosnt say where or how to make the payment??  He has contacted the post office but they have no knowledge of the parcel.  Has anyone else been in this position and knows what to do and where to go as he needs the parcel quite urgently please??  Thanks in advance

Normally the Post Office collects the duty. Can he not ask the local post office where the distribution centre is?

It might be one of the bigger post offices on Samui. If they can't track the parcel, maybe try  post office at origin.

The only other suggestion I can think of is maybe the Customs in Bangkok, as everything seems to go through there before forwarding to the provinces.

Surely that is the whole point of the tracking number, that they and you can follow the parcel.

It depends on how you sent it, if it was sent thru regular mail (Royal Mail UK?) then you have to go to the post office and pay the duty...but you will first receive a invoice delivered by the postman stating how much duty is to be paid.

 

If one the other hand it was sent by courier it will be held in Bangkok until the duty is paid. If you are in UK and sent it by DPD it will be handled by Aramex here...if so send me a PM and I'll send you the contact details of the lady who looks after it

Hi, many thanks for the replies.  I am in the UK and used Parcel2Go to send it and on tracking it just says that that is being held at the distribution office awaiting payment and that the addressee has been notified (but thats all they notified him about the fact that its being held - not saying where or how to make the payment). 

After getting in touch with Parcel2Go again today they said that they have told the courier and they will get in touch with him but could be in a couple of days!  and they couldn't tell us where it is?  Thats exactly what I thought - what is the point of a tracking number if you cant find out where it is???

Just thought if any of you guys knew of the procedure we might be able to act a bit sooner as I know these firms take their time!

Without knowing who's doing the clearance it's fairly difficult to know who to get in touch with.

 

If you have to have to send stuff in the future use DHL and pay the clearance/duty up front, that way it'll be delivered to the door without being held in Bangkok...or use Royal Mail with tracking and any duty owing can be paid at the Post Office

Post Office is always the preferred route to avoid being held to ransom by couriers.

Any duty payable can be done at collection at the local Post Office and any refund claim can also be made there if the duty is deemed unfair for any reason.

There are also readily available contact numbers for both the Post Office and Customs office.

Had a similar "case" a few years ago. I live on Koh Phangan. The parcels came from Australia and were first held in Bangkok Customs and I had to go to Samui Customs Office to pay the duty. After that it was sent to my address. If Parcel2go is an agency you have to find out who the actual courier was and if it's held in customs or elsewhere. They should be able to tell you where it is....theoretically

I had a similar thing the other week where a parcel went missing.

Your original poster (Parcel2Go) will track down the courier, and if your your son have left a phone number, will probably get a call from the courier company in Thailand, or even the courier himself if he can speak English.

Around 25 percent is a good guess, that's what I've just been charged by a shipper.

A lot depends on what is in the parcel.

I have had to pay customs duty on behalf of a number of owners sending parcels to their villas.

Small generator (many many years ago - pre HomePro) was about 800 baht.

Box of miscellaneous household items including casino chips, packs of cards etc - 2,000 baht . No receipt. (Gambling is illegal here.)

Anywhere between 20 & 30%

 

If it is from UK via DPD then it's odds on favourite that Aramex will do the clearing in Bangkok...once you know it's in country (and is being held for duties/taxes to be paid) contact Am...
