I saw an interview with a White House Trade Official on CNN. All the guy could do is claim that the media was trying to frighten the citizens and he went on with a critique of how Obama dealt with the minor outbreak of a much less contagious disease back in 2009. He answered no question in any direct way and then complained when the interviewer interrupted his spiel that she was not allowing him to answer (a question she had not asked!).

Usually in such disaster scenarios, the opportunity to interact with the media should be grasped with both hands. People prefer the straight talk. If you downplay something like this, you make people frightened, much more frightened, when it becomes apparent that things are much worse than the government has been letting on.

Remember Churchill's speech to the British at the beginning of World War 2: "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil tears and sweat." He told it to them straight and the people followed him into the jaws of hell.

I recall the POTUS saying more people die from car wrecks and we don't ban driving. Also said that the fatality rate is a little less than the average flu season.

As for CNN. Communist News Network. Clinton News Network. and I'm sure there are more catchy names that say the same. ANYONE who believes one sentence from that propaganda network... na, won't launch into that and get banned here again...

For those non-ussa people who don't quite follow the news of ussa as close as some of us yanks do, CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, Reuters, AP, to name a few are full on propaganda machines and nothing less. It's been shown that they have CIA people on their staff advising/suggesting/writing? their news, of course that sort of story doesn't go far. Just saying, don't believe ANY of the <deleted> they push.

One got remind oneself time and again any press conference/interview coming from Trump's mancave ie White house is complete waste of time, unless one wants to delude oneself and listen to them rant. You want straight talk? you've got it: "Everything is beautiful (such as the non-existent test kits) and perfect (such as the "phone call") and you -pointing to the press- are a bunch of idiots!"

Do not trust because they stand by the flag that they love the country or the people it represents, and just because they all huddle around the oval office that they're not the dumbest on the face of the earth that money and position can hire ("I only hire the best of the best!") And NEVER, NEVER point out that the emperor has no clothes, because that means: "CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, Reuters, AP, to name a few are full on propaganda machines and nothing less. It's been shown that they have CIA people on their staff advising/suggesting/writing?" same re-heated drivel served up time and time again by Trump's master "propaganda machines" (installed somewhere inside the Kremlin.)

Such defiance toward the press all started with Spicer, ie the beginning of Trump terms. They rather not have to answer any questions if they can help it, and when they do all stick to same template of talking to the press as described in the first post (deny, deflect, defame ). Even an illustrious figure such as Fauci couldn't come out of it unscathed. Observe his facial expressions standing beside Trump nowadays, that is whenever he doesn't try to hide his face - or becomes such bad optics that needs to be banished occasionally from the daily briefings.

Why can’t we identify Patient #1 from Wuhan?  It would be a tremendous help for vaccine scientists and researchers worldwide.  CCP has been largely uncooperative.

It is very easy to say something and for some reason everyone has 20/20 vision in hindsight.

My niece is an intern at a large hospital in Bangkok and back in January there was a fairly large number of Chinese tourists attending the hospital. As she did her degree in China and could speak Chinese she was often called on to assist. They weren't interested in being tested, just some medication and back to the hotel, and then China I suppose. Highly probable that many have had the virus and shrugged it off as a cold or flu so you can put any theory you want on the numbers.

There has been large unexplained variations in mortality, and as in any situation the larger the sample the more accurate the result. China with recorded cases of around 80K has a recorded mortality of about 4%, Italy on the other hand with around 90K cases is recording mortality about 10%, more than double China. Then there is Germany with around 60K cases and mortality less than 1%, in line with TVF thinking that would mean the numbers are falsified.

At the end of the day, mortality is the overriding issue and if bodies were piling up at the hospitals we would all know about it very quickly.

People should remember that

Testing does not prevent the virus.

Testing is not a treatment for the virus.

Testing does not stop you from dying from the virus.

In this day and age everyone wants to "model" a situation, but you cannot do that without data, and human nature being what it is everyone thinks they can produce better data. A useless concept if the data comes too late to be effective.

Isolation has been a key word, but if anything positive can come from this pandemic it would be that no country can work effectively in isolation.
