There has been a sharp spike in internet and mobile usage as more people are staying at home due to the Covid-19 threat, Jirachai Kunakorn, chief network operations officer at True Corporation Plc, said.

“We detected increased usage in all of our channels, including fiber and broadband internet, cable TV and mobile phone,” he said. “In the past month, the internet bandwidth usage has increased 52 per cent while mobile data usage has increased 18.4 per cent.”

To cope with the increase in demand, True Corp has increased its domestic and international bandwidth capacity by up to three times, Jirachai said.

“We realise that communication infrastructure is one of the basic needs of modern people especially in the time of virus crisis where people are advised to keep their distance from each other but still need to stay in touch,” he said.

“True will make sure that our customers have a seamless online experience whether they are watching breaking news, working from home via video conferencing or browsing entertainment content from international sources.

“In addition, our team of engineers will be monitoring the system in real time 24 hours a day even when they work for home thanks to the remote access system that enables them to fix the problem from anywhere,” he added.

That means they can increase bandwith as they wish?

I would imagine international bandwidth is costing them quite a bit of money to increase.

Bet they can't.

The hard way to go is throttling on certain content.

In Europe Netflix, Youtube, Facebook and Instagram have voluntarily limited video quality/resolution.

The illegal streaming/p2p content is under pressure and could be blocked.

Luckily  I downloaded and keep a few terabytes of movies and series on hard drives in anticipation of the zombie apocalypse ????

There seem to be hundreds of millions out there who are anticipating just such an event. The amount of panic and fear mongering I am seeing is unreasonable, inane and irresponsible. Take a deep breath. Do some meditation or yoga. Get a grip!

The number of dead, worldwide, is no more than the annual death toll on Thailand's roads.

The world has gone collectively insane and millions will lose their livelihood and/or business as a result. We've sometimes read of mass hysteria in a group of people, but to see it on an international scale is remarkable. Most people, if they catch it at all and only an infinitesimal number have, are ill for a few days, a couple of weeks at most, and then carry on as usual.
