BANGKOK (NNT) - Since the invocation of the Emergency Decree over COVID-19, many people have been stocking up with necessary items, including chicken eggs, resulting in shortages in some areas, and some sellers have been exploiting this situation by profiteering.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered the Ministry of Commerce to investigate and prevent the exploitation of the situation for profit. The Ministry will be investigating the entire egg supply chain, from farms to the hands of customers, ensuring fairness to all.

Officials from the Ministry of Commerce have inspected Kanokwan Farm, a large chicken egg producer in Nakhon Sawan, reported to be selling eggs at unreasonably high prices. They have filed a report at Nong Krod Police Station to launch formal prosecution.

The officials have also inspected Chanomporn Farm in Nakhon Pathom, where the owner has admitted to selling eggs above the regular price, raising it to 3.8 baht from 2.8 baht per egg. The farm was still selling 300,000 eggs at the time of inspection.

In Phitsanulok, commercial affairs officials have inspected an egg shop in Phitsanulok city, located by the railway, after receiving complaints from the public alleging that the shop sells a pack of eggs at 140 baht, which is considerably higher than the regular price.

The shop has been charged with a violation to the Price of Goods and Services Act BE 2542, which could result in up to 7 years imprisonment, or up to 140,000 baht in fines, or both.

Reminds me of the saying,... "To have or caught with egg on your face' means to be made to look foolish or to be embarrassed."

I just told the Mrs to back to the egg lady that she used to buy eggs from up until the other day when she raised her price from 100 baht per tray to 170 baht per tray, naturally my wife declined the offer and exchanged words with her.

I am going to send my Mrs back to her to ask her what her price is and to make sure she has her mobile on, and if the eggs are more than a 100 baht a tray, that she can then tell her that she will report her, then we will see who has egg on her face, "B".

Could be your wife, if the egg lady loses face and her temper then starts 'chucking' them.

How is this not market forces? again, if the government wants to intervene, they need to buy the eggs at market prices - you know, supply and demand, and then sell to people at whatever price they deem is appropriate and subsidise as they do with things like fuel.

I have always wondered how does the government decide which shops or which types of eggs should be price controlled. There are many supermarket chains in Bangkok that sell their eggs for 70-90 baht or so for 10-pack, i.e. 7-9 baht per egg.

So where are the eggs ? none in the shops markets or supermarkets in my town . Chickens gone on strike ?

Hens lay less eggs during hot/high humidity season.   Then you add in some panic buying and a shortage is imminent.   But it seems to depend on where.  Seems like pockets of farms are sold out.  But there may be places that stock eggs that still have them.
