Popular Post BKKBike09
We're all doomed! Or maybe not. The problem is that statistics are always open to interpretation. "Lies, damned lies, and statistics". In the case of COVID, not enough is known about total number of infections, unlike 'normal flu', where years of data allow for accurate modelling. I don't know (because I've stopped actively looking) how many people are currently recorded worldwide as Covid-infected, but something over 600,000. Of whom something like 4% have died. But if there are, say, 10x that number of undetected cases, then right now that death rate would be much lower. Of course, there may also be many people dying because of COVID-induced illness but not recorded as such. In South Korea, authorities found approximately 90% of the Shinjeongji church cult members who showed symptoms tested positive for Covid. They also random sampled asymptomatic members, and found 75% were positive. The report in question doesn't say the size of the sample, but given the extent of South Korea's testing regime, I would expect it to be significant (the cult has around 10,000 members). See: https://www.wired.com/story/a-south-korean-covid-19-czar-has-some-advice-for-trump/ A report has just been issued in UK (27 March) by the ICNARC (Intensive Care National Audit Research Centre) reporting outcomes on COVID-19 in critical care in UK and comparing with patients critically ill from viral pneumonia (non-COVID) during 2017-19. See: https://www.icnarc.org/About/Latest-News/2020/03/27/Report-On-775-Patients-Critically-Ill-With-Covid-19 It compares 775 Covid ICU patients with 5,755 non-Covid viral pneumonia patients. Some highlight findings are (I've rounded some of the % figures): Average age at admission > around 60 for both groups Admission by sex (%M/F) > Covid 70/30; non-Covid 55/45 BMI greater than 25 > Covid 70%; non-Covid 60% Needed mechanical ventilation support > Covid 80%; non-Covid 45% Death rate > Covid 50%; non-Covid 25% On the face of it, it clearly shows that Covid affects seriously more men than women, that it causes much more serious respiratory issues than 'normal' viral pneumonia (which is a nasty disease in itself), and that Covid-associated morbidity is much greater than 'normal' viral pneumonia. Being clinically overweight is also more of a risk factor (good luck in the USA). However ... this is all still early stage analysis and, as the sample sizes grow, it is quite possible that the data will change. But it could change either way, which makes public health and general government policy on this issue so difficult. What is sobering to note is that the viral pneumonia cohort (5,755) in this study was recorded over 36 months. The Covid cohort (775) in just 2 months. That, more than anything, speaks to the virulence of Covid and its potential impact on both health systems and general economies if left unchecked. 5 2

Popular Post 4MyEgo
Solly to be the party pooper, but I think it's time for a lot of guys here on TVF to start think about their health and look at themselves really hard as a vehicle, all jokes aside if they are worried about the Covid-19. If you don't maintain your vehicle, in this example (you), you are going to have problems as we all know vehicles age, apart from normal wear and tear, that said, if you change the oil/s (good oil/s) every 10-15 clicks, your motor should run good for many years to come, same applies for the fuel you use, etc, etc, etc. Longevity can be achieved by eating well, exercising, maintaining a healthy weight and, drinking moderately, i.e. maintaining the vehicle (you) with the good oil/s, good fuel etc, etc, etc. Ever heard the saying; your body is your temple ? Too many of us abuse our bodies because it's too easy to be lazy, it's our biggest excuse, that said, each to their own temple, as for myself, I will keep maintaining my vehicle best I can, because it's not only the Covid-19 out there that we have to worry about, it's the internals of our body that we need to keep looking after so as to fight off, the biggest killers, heart attacks, (already had one 13 years ago) strokes, diabetes, these are a given from how we maintain our vehicle, through the oils and fuels we feed out vehicle, the viruses are just something else. If our vehicle is running good, and our immune system being part of that, then we have a good chance of fighting off the Covid-19, let alone the bigger killers. 5

Popular Post Saltire
Hello there from a young 65 year old with type 2 diabetes, 3 stents and slightly high blood pressure, all for about the last 10 years. I will change my avatar to 'Vulnerable' later. NB I am no longer 'fat'. interesting stats, I choose viral peumonia over Covid, and as a former methematician/statistician I would say - wait - as the inconsistency between over 100 countries data collection, accuracy and honesty means there is virtually nothing you can say with certainty. Best you could say maybe that S Korea and/or Taiwan may be nearer the truth. Op post also highlights that for several reasons, some covid deaths may be going in the viral pnemonia box 'in error' in some countries with less abilities and faciities. In my favour I changed my lifestyle more than 2 years ago to ketogenic and now am 20 Kg lighter (45 pounds for my USA friends). Also exercise twice a day (indoors on my treadmill nowadays!) and long stopped any medications. Keto alledgedly improves your immune system so hope that's true. Self isolatiing for a week now, I believe this is the most effective for a no-longer-fat bloke over 60. Stay safe

gk10002000
I hope this whole situation points out the greatness of the old Boy Scouts Motto "Be Prepared". Statistically speaking it is better to be fit, not obese, not smoke, not eat MacDonald's every day, etc. Mild exercise, light weigh training, all are more likely to make your later years better. So many elderly people are just out of luck being old, a bit weak, etc. Sad but that is how humans evolved. Smoking never helps a flue, or a lung condition. Being HIV positive is probably not helpful as that has always shown people to be more susceptible to pneumonia and other diseases. 158,000 people in the USA will die from lung cancer each year, and 80% of them were svoluntary smokers. So many similar bad habits are out there. Straighten up folks. Remember the old saying "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"? Compassion and empathy and sympathy are nice, but can not help when things go bad
Popular Post vogie
I think that life long longevity is more to do with your genes than keeping fit, there are many athletes that have a shorter life than some of the couch potatoes. I have an irregular heart beat, calcium on the heart valves, had a cardiogram at the Sattahip hospital and the doctor said to me "you have good pump" I thought that'll do me. My grand father smoked Woodbines all his life and it never did him any harm, mind you he was 27 when he died. 1
