Justice minister Somsak Thepsuthin said that around 100 prisoners rioted at Buriram prison in the north east of Thailand late yesterday morning.

The dining hall was set ablaze and extensive damage was done to visitor facilities.

A number of the prisoners escaped in the confusion. Some of them are believed to be men serving life in prison.

The riot happened after prisoners alleged that there was a Covid-19 outbreak at the prison. Authorities were preparing quarantine facilities when a group of around 100 rioted.

There has been no Covid-19 outbreak, said the authorities.

Somsak said that army, police and the provincial governor's resources were mobilized following the riot and breakout. Seven prisoners have already been recaptured after checkpoints were set up.

Naew Na published pictures of a small group of men changing clothes.

Pictures published by Sanook showed the visitors' area smashed up. They said that doors and windows were damaged.

No deaths were reported and most of the prison's 2,000 inmates were under lock and key last night.

Changing clothes to what?  If normal civilian clothes, that would require outside help, which would mean this was no spur of the moment thing, but something planned in advance.

Seven convicts who tried to escape from a prison in Buriram province in the morning have been arrested.

Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin said that about 100 officers were faced with a situation where some 2,000 prisoners attempted to break out. The officers collaborated with the Army and police in the local area to cope with the situation.

A number of convicts managed to escape from the prison but now the officers have capture seven of them.

Somsak said that the prisoners saw an opportunity to escape while the officers were preparing a quarantine room inside the prison. They set off a fire in the canteen to distract the guards.

Most of them had been convicted for serious crimes but there was no report of any death during the incident.

They captured 7 escaped prisoners.......

But how many escaped? If there are 500 "runners" then getting 7 is not really a high number
