Popular Post JohnFlory
I just thought I'd post a positive contribution to Thailand by a foreigner, ie me. Thousands of other foreigners do the same because we love our families and because our wives' have extended families that are important to them and thus they are important to us. How many on this forum have paid for or helped pay for shelter in the countryside for family members? How many have paid medical bills? How many have paid education fees? 3

dayward1
"I just thought I'd post a positive contribution to Thailand by a foreigner, ie me." Great way to pat yourself on the back. Keep it up and you'll have a looooong list of 'extended' family members turning up. My stepson and my wife's grandma are here. No more.

I patted myself on the back and all others who contribute to Thai society. Since "John Florey" is not my real name and most of the extended family can't read English, I think I'll be ok though. 2
dayward1
What does your name and anyone being able to read English have to do with it? I think we all contribute to Thai society by spending our money here and frequenting their businesses. Oh no! Do you know who I am? OMG!! I must change my ID stat! ???? Word gets around quickly in this place White Knight. These folks will love you until the funds dry up, then they'll move along. You might even get a 'thanks'. Curt1591
Since most of my Thai in-laws earn far more than I do, or have plenty of money squirreled away, I have never felt the need. However, my wife and I do shop local as much as possible. 1

phutoie2
it's all about wives and sweethearts. wives will always be taken care of, but not forget the sweethearts. Today I have had a distress call from my regular caddy. Single mum, three children. golf course closed, no work, no money. 2

Popular Post mike787
Many have paid and supported the village, girlfriends, friends, kids, x husbands of current wives, the list goes on. RJRS1301
Oh dear watching this is facinating . I think those of us who employ Thai staff will keep paying them and have over a period of time contributed to loyal people enabling children to gain an education health care etc. It is what you do if in a position to contribute to community. The old addage is "it takes a village to>>>>>>>>" (add someting positive) 1

Tell one of the family you are having a hard financial time, due to the virus, and ask to borrow some money from them. Let me know how you go. ???? The money you give should be looked upon as a donation, trouble is, there are a lot more people in need around the world than Thai's who claim to be in need. 3
scubascuba3
There is a fine line between them needing money and them fleecing you but now millions really do need it all over the world, just look at facebook
SpanishExpat
Never did it and never will do it. Everyone has the chance to chose the "right" gf at the beginning ???? I respect everyone who has a different opinion, but seeing how some Thai friends treat there "teerak" abroad is just a pure shame. In one case, a friend of a friend got what she wanted. Asked her UK bf after 2 yrs of relationship to pay her everything to set up a business. Guess what...all the promises "i will marry you, move with you to UK " blabla...forgotten. She lives now with her family in her hometown in Isaan again, the business works well for them, she never returned back to UK, but funnily is still in a relationship with that guy (twice per year 2 weeks holidays in LOS and he brings her tons off gifts (which are then shown of on FB/IG to see how deep and unique their love is lol) ) Edited March 31, 2020 by SpanishExpat

It's like this anywhere in the world. Friends, family, all must keep up their end of the relationship. How long could you manage being friends with the guy who never pitches in, who's always broke whenever you go out? The buddy who moved in and is always short on the rent? What about the plenty of young ladies with deadbeat boyfriends, though they might be fathers of their children? I've had these people in my own family who we had to cut loose. On their end they moaned and groaned, "Man, why you always gotta make this about money? Don't you care about me? What about all I've done for you, blah blah?" Meanwhile there's bills and rent, and they've been on the couch all afternoon. When you look at it this way, it's not just the money, but if the person really cares about those they're involved with. To stay in this country, with our gracious hosts, we've gotta pitch in. But on the other hand, we must know where to draw the line. Yes, I'll buy some groceries for your parents. Yes, I'll pay their electric bill this time. But no, I can't get Uncle Bob a new motorbike, and you don't need an iPad. There's certainly a difference between doing your part, and getting taken for a ride. 3

Puchaiyank
Really, when you live with a Thai woman, most ex-pats understand that it is a package deal...including children, family, and sometimes even close friends. The trick is discerning genuine need vs exploitation... 1

baansgr
Helping/contribuing ovasaionaly for essentials...why not...but when guys are already paying their gf/wife a monthly "salary" and then are asked/expected to pay more for other stuff is a total pee take..what happened to all that money over the years and also in most relationship s Tirak will have other family members that should be capable of "taking care"....not to mention the brother with a new pick up and sisters with latest I phones. Up to the individual but really guys should have more respect for themselves than being taken advantage of, because that's exactly what it is.
