Hi all

couple of us would like to visit one of the above as there are some great deals to fly there.

Please could the forum assist with the choice.

Based on things to pass away a few days (3) WITHOUT going outside of the city, or not more than a few km's by public transport.

Fans of culture, nature and a nice evening drink. Like food with change from 100baht for two:-)

Do not need massages:-)

Thanks in advance

NONG KHAI was a nice couple of days. Not far from Khon Kean. Spend a week and take in all three places.

Get up to Nong Khai if you don't want serious nightlife.

From Udon airport take the Thai Airways 'limo' (100B/person) to Nong Khai, about 40 minutes away.

I recommend staying at the Mut Mee Guest House, which is on the bank of the Mekong - the rains have come and it is once again 'mighty'.

Spend some time at the Indochine Market (Tha Sadet) which runs along the bank of the river , eat lunch at one of the riverside restaurants there.

Take a tuk tuk (150B return) to Sala Kaew Koo - a temple with some pretty weird statues of Hindi/Buddhist figures. Visit Wat Po Chai on the way back - there is a much revered Buddha image there, and the story of its journey from Laos to Thailand is depicted on the walls inside the temple.

There many different kinds of restaurants - Daow or Julian at the Mut Mee will point you in the right direction.

NK generally closes at around 10pm, though you can listen to strained versions of the Thai national anthem (Hotel California) at either the Winner or Mitre Pub (1am closing).

There are a few falang orientated bars and cafes, although some of them attract flotsam and jetsam that have made their way up here from Pattaya.

There is a little guidebook to Udon, produced by farangs last year. If you PM me a snail mail address, I'll send you a copy.

It is worth going up to Nong Khai, even if only for a day, as you will see from the bus some of the poorer land of Esarn, and how hard the people have to work just to get one crop of rice. They have to grow the rice plants in a nursery bed and then take them up and transplant them to the paddies when the main rains come. And those are two back-breaking tasks.

I don't know what time the trains run from Udon to Nong Khai, but if there are daytime ones, you will get an even better look at rural Esarn.

Udon Thani has an interesting museum on Phosi road behind Nong Prajak lake, here you will find information all about Udon Thani province.

Nong Prajak lake is nice to walk around in the evenings and you will also find some really nice restaurants around the lake.

Korean BBQ's are very popular in Udon now, you can get a decent size meal for 59bt per person. MC is probably the best place to try, you will find it on the Prajak road leading away from the train station.

Center Point night market is worth a look if you like shopping, there are also some cheap restaurants around this area. Center Point is next to the train station.

Wat Pa Ban Tat forrest temple (20 Minute taxi ride) located just outside Udon is home to the famous buddist priest monk Phra Maha Bua.

You could also visit the Sunshine Orchid farm not far from the north-western ring-road or Na Kha Thai silk village.

Udon Map has more information and they have good maps available all over Udon.

I hope this helps and have a good time.
