Time to sue China?

Yes, they released it, having had the virus isolated long before letting the world know that it was a very dangerous human-transmissable dangerous virus - and having blocked foreign medical/researchers from coming in to take samples and independently-assess the situation.

For almost three weeks, doctors struggled to connect the dots between Ms. Wei and other early cases, many of them Hua’nan vendors.

Last week, Zhong Nanshan, one of China’s most highly regarded epidemiology experts and the leader of the National Health Commission’s task force on the epidemic, said officials had identified a coronavirus by Dec. 31.

The World Health Organization said its China office was informed on Dec. 31.

Doesn't look like China made any deliberate attempt to delay information.

Could they have done it quicker, sure, the politicians slowed the process down. These were not deliberate attempts to harm the West, these were systemic processes. It would have been no different in the West, as we saw when Germany took until 17 March to end flights from China. Politicians act slow, delay. It's what they do.

Yes agree 100%, China must be forced to pay reparations. They must pay every single penny lost to everybody due to their (lets be frank) evil and appalling handling of their virus, plus lump sums to bereaved families that lost loved ones. Even to this day the CCP are trying to blame the US or UK for the outbreak. The false narrative aided and boosted by the usual suspects in the west. By punishing China it will ensure the next time they have a virus leak from a top secret lab or from some bat eater they will be open and honest about it.

But. . . but. . .  the WHO boss has been been full of praise for his Chinese chums.

However, this then had to work its way through the political instances. Nevertheless China reacted to an unknown enemy very quickly, they published the Genome on 11 January. The Chinese gave the West a window of opportunity to do something.

To the contrary. The CCP hid as much as possible as long as possible including the level of H2H transmission. They refused anyone including the WHO to visit Wuhan as long as humanly possible.

China published the genome on January 11 because the had to.

Thailand detected its first case on January 8 and had already sequenced the genome. On January 12 they announced they had confirmed China's genetic sequence.

"At that time, a medical team at the Thai Red Cross Emerging Infectious Diseases Health Science Centre, Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University was able to detect the virus, and initially identify it as an unknown coronavirus. They kept it isolated, and as soon as China shared the genome of COVID-19 on 11 January, they were able to confirm a match and disclose this information on 12 January." http://www.thailandtoday.in.th/news-update/news-highlight/2428

Yah, it's all here in the Wall Street Journal.

China mapped the genome on 2 Jan and again on 5 Jan.

"The institute would later reveal that it had identified a new coronavirus and mapped its genetic sequence by Jan. 2—critical steps toward containing the epidemic and designing a vaccine. But that wasn’t made public at the time.

On Jan. 5, a medical research center in Shanghai notified the National Health Commission that one of its professors had also identified a SARS-like coronavirus and mapped the entire genome using a sample from Wuhan, according to an internal notice."

It was only on the 9th that China announced an outbreak of a coronavirus. It shared the genome 3 days later.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-it-all-started-chinas-early-coronavirus-missteps-11583508932

So yes there was maybe a delay of 6 days or so, as the politicians were debating internally whether to release this.

But we're talking about days here. Again, Germany took two months and four days to end flights from China.

If anything the Chinese response was lightning fast compared to the responses by Western politicians.

At that time, China was telling the WHO to tell us the virus was not transmissible person-to-person.  And you are skipping the earlier part - when they ordered the destrution of the first sets of samples - cover-up phase-1.  Their reaction was much like Chernobyl - what we could expect from such a regime - but far more damaging to the world than that event.

One does not have to make the case that the virus was released deliberately (I do not believe this), or that subsequent spreading was done with intent (more plausiable than the first assertion, but still lacking evidence of such).  The questions at hand are

  • Did the Chinese cover up the truth about the virus
  • Did that lead to the virus-spread
  • What were the consequences of this?

I do not see any way that is disputable, given what we know at this point.  Those who spoke out were cracked-down upon.  And there are still "disappeared" scientists (virologists) in China right now - so the cover-up is ongoing.

That said, there is plenty of blame to go around in the West - from those allowing the outsourcing to China to ever occur in the first place, to allowing Chinese researchers into our universities, to allowing dangerous virus-research in OUR labs by Anyone ... to the more recent events, including not stopping flights sooner from infected areas, believing the WHO's echoing of Chinese propaganda, etc.

The first whistle-blower (Dr. Li) got detained and eventually he died after infecting the virus from patients.

Yes, because the Chinese themselves were not certain that human to human transmission was possible. Remember this is a brand new virus.

Well, no the Chinese did not cover up the truth about the virus, you'd have a very hard time making that argument, because the Chinese released the genome, disclosed to the WHO on 31 December etc.

The Chinese would point to these facts and say "see, we've disclosed it all". A court would agree.

It may not have been disclosed as fast you, or me, would have liked, but there is no days requirement here. The fact remains China did disclose the information.

As soon as they found out themselves this was the coronavirus, or very shortly thereafter, they informed the West.

If the above is true, then my only criticism of China is that they didn’t produce a high quality product. Works only 2% of the time. Shocking.

The way to make China pay is in the pocket by stopping setting up businesses there and buying Chinese-made tat.

Lots of hot air on this forum, as per usual. Put your money where your mouth is and boycott China made products, if you can. First thing you will lose is your internet access. Which will actually be a good thing.

Would not make much difference to the fact that China will be hugely asset rich. China's built assets alone are now worth 11 trilllion USD more than America's:

And if the trend continues, what China has built for itself will be worth more than twice America’s built assets by 2025

Again, you can not defeat China. It's just not possible.

It's true China went on an infrastructure building spree. However, infrastructure has no value if there are no people to occupy it. And from what I hear, China has quite a few ghost cities.

Think Brasilia and Naypiyidaw. Public servants only produce paper.

can't be too sure about any of this.  things run differently in china.  it's top-down authoritarian, and the further you go down the chain, the less room there is for mistakes.  orders typically flow down, assent (rarely questions) flow up.

there is a huge surveillance octopus that controls social media, with a multitude of censors and minders combing social media to police public thought.

remember the hong kong situation was/is still simmering, and the censors still had to deal with a massive amount of disinformation (and truth as well) trying to discredit china.  who was the doctor who originally posted this?  an epedimiologist?  no, an eye doctor publishing what would be termed "fake news" if on twitter in the usa.  he was picked up by local police, low level worker drones, for questioning and released.  i haven't researched any further, so won't make any other claims.  (vpn is working slowly now anyways).

even if there was an small outbreak, wasn't it just a few people at that point, would any politician be trying to cover it up?  more likely trying to ignore it hoping it would just go away.  wasn't there a big party meeting scheduled for wuhan?  big embarassment for the city leaders if anything tarnished their image just before the big event.  big boss tells middle boss he's busy, you handle it.  middle boss tells little boss, little boss tells........

the management system in the government is top-down, is very rigid, and people strictly follow orders.  they are supposed to use their chain-of-command when they have issues, not jump levels or go public.  there's a hell of a lot of cya involved, sucking up to the right people in the right way, and there are repercussions for going outside established channels.  it's a little like commanding an aircraft carrier, where writing a memo can get you fired.

I don't disagree with your sentiment, but good luck in trying to force them to pay, especially since they are in denial and trying to blame others.

Should be easy, but the consequences unimaginable- China holds the vast percentage of the US debt. The US could just say ‘consider it paid’

Ah..the latest emissaries from the United States of Paranoia.

China is a nation that tortures to death political dissidents and kidnaps citizens off the street for not complying with their authoritarian agenda. Is it really unreasonable to question such a thing? Face reality: China is NOT above destabilizing world economies and killing countless people to further their goals. It’s good to have a healthy distrust of sworn, ideological and global enemies. Let me ask you this: why is it that Russia and North Korea have the lowest recorded cases of coronavirus? Because they are strong allies with CHINA.

You seriously need to start considering that these people are not our friends and they’re not above anything in the playbook and rules of war. Go on to YouTube and search up “Chinese intentionally spreading coronavirus “ you will find dozens of CCTV footage of Chinese nationalists sneezing, spitting, and coughing on park benches, elevator buttons, and even other human beings. This is real. Examine it with a rational mind and you’ll find that something isn’t right with this situation. I’m not stating with 100% certainty that this was planned and intentional, but it’s really hard to think otherwise when you consider history and undeniable proof.

Where is your proof. Stop causing problems for the everyday asian because they look like they might be Chinese which has happened in America and Australia. All you are doing on this thread is inciting violence against any Chinese looking Asian.

Well when all else fails play the old race card. No, it is not happening in the US. The only stupid thing said about the Chinese is the statement made by Pelosi and a lot of the news media after Trump put the travel ban into effect. Pelosi said the travel ban is racist, go to China town in SF and celebrate the Chinese New Year and have fun, don’t listen to Trump. Can’t find that news reel now or any of the others, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, Washington Post, NY Times and numerous other news outlet now. All stating the travel band is Racist. Over 40,000 people have returned to the US from China, most all duel citizens or green card holders.

You are talking rubbish because Russia has more cases than Australia. Russia = 6,343 cases + 47 deaths/ Australia = 5,788 cases + 39 deaths. Russia is number 20 on the list for infections. There are also photos and videos of Thais doing the same thing. Go onto the news and you will see European backpackers in Bondi, Sydney ignoring all restrictions just to carry on partying. It shows your contempt and hatred for the Chinese when you will not include the other races for doing the same thing. The worst offenders for spreading this virus are the westerners. People are just ignoring the laws and it is not just the Chinese.

That's true.

What you propose, the freezing of Chinese assets by the USA, actually happened in 1949-1972, including a massive trade embargo.

Didn't stop China from becoming an economic Superman.

It is a litigious world we live in. Anyone can sue anybody for whatever perceived ills have occurred.  Now whether or not winning justifies the means and then collecting on it is another totally separate issue.

Do you know how percentages and population scales work?

Russia has nearly 145 million people

Australia has less than 25 million people

OF COURSE they’re going to have higher reported cases. This is simple math and your point proves absolutely nothing, whatsoever. Also, I meant “lowest recorded cases relative to their respective population sizes” and I should have included that point, but it slipped my mind. Russia is a gigantic landmass near Asia and still their cases are disproportionately lower than they should be, statistically. Australia also has tons and tons of Chinese tourists every year, there is a huge Chinese population there, and yet, they are not in a state of emergency are they? And where’s your argument for North Korea? North Korea is one of China’s greatest allies in their fight against western domination, and yet, nobody there is dropping dead left and right. It’s almost as if China is intentionally spreading biological warfare against sworn global enemies, and if you think otherwise, you’re simply not educated in the matters of history and context. Every time a Chinese-originated pandemic spreads, wether it’s Avian flu, H1N1, Swine Flu, or now, coronavirus, it increases their wealth. You’re welcome to read up on their book-keeping and profit margins during these global crisis events if you don’t believe me, go ahead, look it up.

Also, as far as “thais” spreading the virus intentionally, that’s a big “citation needed”. I can link you dozens of videos of CCTV footage and just straight up smartphone recordings of Chinese tourists and nationalists out right deliberately spreading their germs on surfaces. Show me 3 or 4 videos of Thai people In Bangkok doing the same, and I’ll eat my words and retract everything I’ve said. You can’t. You are talking out of your bum and being argumentative for the sake of being argumentative, or you yourself have some kind of investment in China or their motives. It is not “racist” or “xenophobic” to point out that China is an awful, authoritarian hellscape who mistreats their citizens and constantly tries to extend their reach and dominance, you simply should just grow a brain and examine the facts rationally instead of being argumentative, who believes that every single human is a good person with good intention. All signs point to this being DELIBERATE and intentional, and it’s not a coincidence that the places least affected are... strong allies with China. Logic would dictate that Russia who is very, very close to China, would be one of the hardest hit places in the world. I wonder why that isn’t?
