After roughing it at Phuket crematorium building, stranded Russian tourists moved to resort

PHUKET:-- Three Russian tourists who had been sleeping in an open-air building next to the crematorium at Wat Mai Khao for more than a week as they had been unable to board any flights home have been moved to a resort at Nai Yang Beach.

 

“The owners of the resort will provide free accommodation and free meals until a plane from Russia arrives,” said Phuket Vice Governor Supoj Rotreuang Na Nongkhai, who visited the Russian trio – Nikolai Sharov, 28; Sofia Sharova, 23; and Aleksei Galievi, 30 – at the temple yesterday (Apr 5).

 

The Russian government may send a plane to pick up Russian nationals who need to get home, but at this time the exact date and time are not yet known,” he added.

That’s is nice of them ,,,how ever how do you end up not having money this day and age with the availability of credit cards,world wide instant money transfers etc etc,,,,,friends or family could have money sent with in an hour

Is that an iphone I see in the left pocket? Couldn't possibly trade in a high-residual phone and get a cheap 2000baht android for "essential communication" (as is usually the excuse for not selling the iphone when begging with postcards or gofundme)

When I was in my 20s and early 30s I went on many holidays and ended up with 5 pounds at the airport on the way home. Had insurance for most eventualities, never really thought about what would happen if the plane didn't fly, and all the other flights didn't happen either ....... it was just unthinkable that something like that could happen.

They look like Backpackers to me.  Living one day to the next, and using hostels and sleeping where they can.  I think there is more to the story that has not been told.

Probably they don't have any bank card otherwise it would be easy for their relatives to top up their account. 

Maybe they had some small money left and decided to save on accommodation at first ????

Anyway good luck that Thai people helped them.

It is still not clear when the evacuation flights will be done - Russian government proclaimed that it is possible to process only 500 persons coming from abroad a day - to provide quarantine facilities as far now - and there are over 20 000 Russians abroad now ????

They were set to leave when their flight was cancelled and were forced to rough it while waiting for their ticket refund and alternate flight home.

 

Backpackers usually budget their money for the exact duration of their trip with little leftover.  That's how I planned my trip when I backpacked Europe as a teen.

Back in the 60's when I was a youngster I think it was an British thing work like a dog for 50 weeks a year then go to Benidorm for 2 weeks and blow your brains out and spend every penny you had, I remember getting stranded in Malta flight delay for 14 hours there was people there with young families with no money couldn't even buy a drink, I think then the airlines had no obligation to provide you with anything.

It is very humane to offer and give help to anybody stranded. Thailand is safer than many other European countries, and I wonder why there are so many complaining comments from farangs, they are whining all the time, nothing is good enough for them. There is no a perfect country.
