Roll on Logans Run. I read the book and the film isn't a patch on it.

(The premise is that when you're born you are "printed" with a countdown timer, when it expires you go for euthanasia unless you become a runner: in that eventuality you are hunted down and killed)

sounds like expat life

No country that I know of is good for old men.  Get past 60 and nobody in authority gives a toss if you live or die.

I went back to work in a well known Middle East country at the age of 60. No probs getting a work and residence visa, on top of a fully expenses car and luxury apartment.  Sponsor welcomed me with open arms and was not the first company In my career to give preference to significant experience over a degree. I stayed for 9 years and voluntarily retired. OK Thailand is vastly different but the point being there still exist ‘good’ places in the world to work, live and even retire to

Living in Pattaya I had always done all the paperwork and legwork myself for many years. A few months ago someone told me about a travel agent on Soi Post Office, and now I think "Why did I ever go through all that hassle myself" ? Straight across from the Post Office, starts with a T, very friendly and knowledgeable, and above all, reasonable ????

"Why did I ever go through all that hassle myself?"

What hassle? I'm staying 5 min from Jomtien immigration. I get my bank letter from Bangkok Bank around the corner from immigration in 5 min. I get the copies needed outside immigration. Print out the TM7-form and sign it plus signing the copies. I'm doing my extensions late in May after lunch and normally there are only a very few people waiting at desk 8. I'm out in a few minutes.

I use a visa agent at a reasonable cost - don't go anywhere near Immigration except for my annual photo and updated passport return  - in five minutes, I'm clear for another year.

Yes indeed, like here in Cambodia - simplicity, no need at all to attend an Immigration Office. No such thing as a 90 Day report or a TM30! One gets a visa and that is it until it expires (6 months or one year). If over 50, you qualify for a retirement visa but you are not permitted to work (separate visa) and you do not have to show money in the bank - oh so simple! I am very sorry for you ex-pats shackled to a Thai wife or partner!

I think that is why the virus is with us.  Far too many pensioners on the planet , wipe us out and more room for the younger ones.....that is 'till they reach culling age.

Nah.  Think about it, the world is run by people who are 60+.  No way they'd potentially kill themselves off if a pandemic gets out of control.  Old people are paranoid about diseases.

Besides, cost of health care for seniors is exponentially higher than other age brackets.  Purposelly infecting seniors will cause a drain on any national economy.

Now, if world govts. had announced stopping of senior healthcare before covid-19 broke out, then I'd believe it.

and the outragious charges for heating, and don't forget council tax and TV licence.

Don't pay heating, no tv license  subsidized council tax, live in tropics so no heating or air con fans do,no tv license, minimal council tax pensioner. Just had triple bypass free ruined my three trips to Thailand a year but saved by Corona virus nobody is going anywhere, for a while.

I have ex-wife problems since before the divorce.. I also paid for this house, agreed in court divorce agreement I could live here to raise our child till 20... ex-signed she would provide needed papers for my visa....does not... police not interested, immigration not interested, even I showed them the court divorce agreement, they want a new paper from ex to sign...which she will never...ex does not even pickup phone for own child anymore... ex breaks the law / court agreement and the one with the kaka is me...

now you could say: go back to court... great...my current lawyer wants another 100.000 baht for just petition the court , to remind my ex to follow the agreement...

what I got as info from other lawyer, is that, even I go back to court, it does not mean my ex can be forced to sign the paper I need, crazy ?   welcome to Thailand

off course, there is no penalty for here, she cannot be made to pay court fees/my lawyer fees /  she stole just before leaving and starting divorce a big sum of money of mine, so her lawyer is on my expense...  and thai court does not punish theft under married people and at court, my ex and her lawyer smiled and said: I gave her to money and it's done & gone... which I did not...  could try to fight another court over this, with lawyer, at a ... 100.000 baht cost of lawyer to try to get back the money she stole ....   immigration wants the paper, they don't care, my ex does not care, nobody gives a  ...

my ex knew cunning biatch in advance, that she could promise to do x,y,z to get the house (I did not claim 5O percent on the false promise I could stay there to live and raise our child)

even I turn 50 "soon".. same problem... cannot stay in the house, or I have to go rent a new place and the only thing beside custody of my child, was a place to live...

sad story and let this be a warning to all contemplating marriage or divorce . Divorce agreement not enforceable in Thailand ?

Can you afford a retirement visa as you are nearly 50 years old ?

es of course, or show 65,000 baht a month income, or a combination. These are the financial requirements required by Immigration to get an extension of stay based on retirement. An agent can't change those requirements.

I know people that use an agent, no money in the bank required. just saying.

True. Even the 'home' country doesn't really want you.

I have the money for visa based of being part of Thai child

I have the money for retirement next year

to problem is: renting a new place, while staying in family home with child was the one reason why I did not go for a long battle in court for the 2 houses we bought during marriage and I was entitled for half.... BIG MISTAKE, I don't have a time machine, so will not cry for it...

I live in a 10 million baht home I helped (cash)pay for ...

I was supposed to be able to live here to raise my child till 20 years child age. (after high school, we projected anyway to go study Uni in Europe... but that is many years in the future)

Losing that and having to go rent a 3rd place, while having paid 2 houses is a very sour pill to swallow.

Provided you pay taxes there, which can be a lot. One of the reasons Thailand doesn't care might be coz we don't pay taxes here.

In most EU countries you'll pay taxes from around 20.000/year. This is about 50.000 Baht/month. I suppose many Brits living here won't have it.

Siem Reap, a tourist resort I know very well. Phnom Penh is a bustling city, can be polluted, and now many new Chinese mega-structures. Sihanoukville now dominated by the Chinese with their hotels, apartments and, most importantly, CASINOS. Battambang is much quieter and very pleasantly situated either side of a river. There is no airport yet (in planning stage) therefore not so busy with tourists. One has to arrive by road, rail (limited weekend service between Phnom Penh and Poi-Pet) or boat across Tonle Sap from Siem Reap. Normally throughout the year, Siem Reap is bustling with tourists visiting the Khmer Civilization Complex around Angkor Wat. Siem Reap has no tall structures like apartment/condo blocks as NO building can be taller than Angkor Wat - must not look down on Buddha!

Can somebody please PM the contact information for an agent in Bangkok to me?  I live on Ratchadamri.  I have the paperwork and money in the bank but may want to avoid queuing at Chaeng Wattana around the beginning of May.  My extension expires on May 13th.  I presume that there will still be lots of contagious people around at that time.  I've always done my own extensions but don't want to risk catching COVID-19 at my age with my pre-existing conditions.  Your recommendation will be appreciated.  Kindly include the fee if you know what it is.
