Thailand reports 111 new coronavirus cases, 3 more deaths

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand on Wednesday reported 111 new coronavirus cases and 3 more deaths.

 

The dead included a 48-year-old Russian, a 69-year-old Indian and a 69-year-old U.S. national, said Taweesin Wisanuyothin, a spokesman for the government's Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration said.

 

Since the pandemic escalated in January, Thailand has reported a total of 2,369 cases and 30 fatalities, while 888 patients have recovered and gone home.

One has to question the last two days figures and indeed every days figures. So much for you guys who believe the figures and saw 32 as turning the corner.

And that's excluding asymptomatic but tested positive in two reference labs and also excluding any positive tests in private hospitals that have not been verified by those labs, which belong to MoPH and Army.

 

In other words, just a small subset of positive test results.

Would be helpful to know the provincial breakdown. Since there is a delayed effect to having symptoms and being tested in most cases this could be the wave that likely occurred when people fled BKK a few weeks ago.

I will ask that pertinent Question? So now are we seeing that possible uptick in numbers from those who failed to heed warnings and still socially gathered in violation of what they were told.  Or from those that still gathered in groups either on the beach or in bars, which id not shut, or from still running around without personal safety at thought.  Could these also be the first numbers from those that traveled home to the provinces?  Just a few Questions as there is no listing, or is it a release from the tests that have been backlogged....

Very likely. Could be samples over a week old. One has to wonder how many samples became too old to be viable to be tested while in the backlog. Perhaps that was the cause of the sudden backlog drop in a day from 7k to 2k immediately before they completely deleted the numbers from the reports.

Oh dear, just when thing seemed to be going in the right direction we're suddenly back to the +/-100 new cases a day scenario. Looks like the quarantine of Pattaya will definitely go ahead now then. Be interesting to hear if Prayut has anything to say.

 

As an aside, RIP to the dead, but they don't mention if the 48 year old Russian had any underlying medical issues. People should understand that the initial impression given by the authorities that Covid-19 is only really a problem for the old and infirm was far too simplistic. For example, from yesterday's news ( https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/locations-confirmed-coronavirus-cases-wales-18053042 ) here's the age distribution of confirmed coronavirus cases in my home country. It's more of a problem for those between 30 and 60 years of age rather than the pensioners, possibly because younger people think nothing can hurt them and so often ignore the self-isolation and social distancing guidelines.

one days outlying data does not break a trend we'll need a few more days rising to do that

I think it was unrealistic to expect a continual downward spiral. Every country, every day has big ups and down, though the trend over the last few days has been encouraging. We have moaned about insufficient tests, but those are becoming much more widely available, so the extra cases may well be because of more testing.

At 100 a day, it will take 1,900 years to get us all, so its not time to run screaming for the hills just yet.

But on the grand scale of things, around 100 cases per day on average is not a bad number. Of course, if it starts rising, and reaches the 200 mark, then a 24 hour curfew would make sense

There was obviously going to be a rise today (and most likely followed by a smaller rise tomorrow) to justify the 24 hour curfew over Songkran.

 

These figures are whatever the Government want them to be in order to justify their next move. They bear no relation to the real number of infections.

No hindsight needed. Said figures were wrong, have been saying figures are wrong and more than likely will continue to say figures are wrong as should anyone with a modicum of logic or common sense. Hindsight would be Prayut saying "Maybe I should not have listened to China and the WHO."

Wonder how many of the limited amount of tests are being used on the elite. Must protect them.

Yes, I just saw that in the newspaper-that-must-not-be-quoted, 42 Thai returnees tested positive so nothing to do with community transmission here in Thailand, which is the biggest concern.

Sorry but that's flawed logic. You would have to subtract all imported cases. There are sub-sets which deal with these numbers. Hope those 40 were identified early and quarantined.

According to the news they were all quarantined straight off the plane so therefore wouldn't have come into contact with normal citizens.

Yes, if you include 42 imported cases (they caught the virus in Indonesia) otherwise its 69 new cases where the virus was caught inside Thailand.

Wife said 40 something (40 up was her report), so I was rounding the figures, somewhere between 60 and 69 cases in Thailand.

Not bad,not good and seemingly not real.The Thai numbers have pretty well been a level flatine firstly around 2-3 every few days for 2 months then jump to the flatline of about 100 per day which is different to every other nation with infections over a long period of time.Exponential is not a concept with which Thailand seems familiar.

It's just the people who felt sick enough and had the cash to pay to get tested. Most Thais don't have the 5000 baht test fee. They are not testing enough people on a daily basis to get an accurate figure.

The 3 deaths are foreigners. Thanks to the crowded immigration offices where distancing is impossible.
