Eighty medics infected with Covid so far

The coronavirus crisis has taken a grave toll on medical staff, with 80 so far infected by the virus since January, said Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman of the government's Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, on Thursday (April 9).

 

As of April 8, coronavirus infections among medical staff accounted for 3.4 per cent of the total 2,258 confirmed cases in Thailand.

 

Of those 80, 50 were infected while working in hospitals – in emergency rooms, dental clinics and operating theatres – while 18 caught the virus in a local community. The source of the remaining 12 infections is still under investigation.

 

Worst hit among medical staff are nurses, 36 of whom have contracted Covid-19 so far. Next on the list come doctors, with 16 infections, followed by pharmacists (2) dentists (2) operating theatre staff (1), sundry others (10), and staff working in the health field (13).

You start putting these numbers together and the look at R-naught wich Thailand is saying is 2.5 if I remember, rest of the world 3.5ish and just from the above, the numbers of infected must be huge. Please anyone logically dismiss this

very surprised with that, if I remember correctly couple days or 1 week ago they were promoting their "special Thai masks"

The general assumption is that people that have had it and recovered have at least some immunity for some period of time. But we really won't know the level of that for some time because the only way to know is to study that group of people over time. But if they have recovered they wouldn't be infectious to others. The public wears masks to protect others. Medical workers hopefully have the higher end masks meant to protect themselves but obviously there is a shortage and these protections are not perfect.

But it paints the wrong pictures, others will follow after seeing them without masks and therefor spread the virus.

 

How can you possible say it's ok for them not to wear masks when almost all your other posts state it's one of the most important things to do to prevent the spread? pot / kettle / black?

It's back to those stupid masks. Surgical masks protect you from nothing. The health staff need 3M® N95 masks and a full enclosure around their heads.

 

Really surprised. Thai layperson doesn't understand anything about germs and virus. You'd think hospitals would. Doctors?! Bet these are the geezer doctors in government hospitals.

they work in the hospital, but who says they got it there and not from family, friends, shopping ...

and how sick are they?

they are positive or they are in ICU ?

 

I bet if they tested random 1000 people, half would be positive ...

 

everybody will get this and GET OVER this, some sick and old, might not...

 

in USA, this could be a Social security saver virus ....  as in a few years, it was seen as not viable to continue to pay boomers

There  is  absolutely NO social  distancing occurring in Pranburi,  drove  past a  market tonight in town, same  as  ever,  loads  of  people right next to each other.

Land of  lip service, wear a  mask "look  good" .....................touch it  all day
