Finance Ministry threatens legal action against false claims for cash handouts

Recipients of the 5,000 baht/month support payments, who used false information to claim the subsidy, will face legal action and will be forced to repay the money, plus interest.

Mr. Lawan Saengsanit, director of Thailand’s Fiscal Policy Office, said that officials are investigating several social media posts, purportedly by those who have received the first payment of 5,000 baht, describing the amount as just “chickenfeed” of the total they have earned.

Others reportedly boasted that they lied about their economic hardship, caused by the coronavirus pandemic, and still got paid by the state.

Mr. Lawan said that, if it can be proven that recipients used false information to claim the subsidy, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society will demand a refund from them and take legal action for providing false information to the authorities.

24 million people have applied for the payments, mostly through online channels, but the Finance Ministry had set a target of nine million eligible applications.

The screening of all the applications is expected to be completed this Sunday. The applications will be divided into three groups, namely a Green Group which pass the screening process, a Red Group who fail the screening and the Grey Group whose qualifications are unclear.

Mr. Lawan said that, although the one trillion baht fund, to be secured by the Government to help individuals and businesses affected by the pandemic, will be sufficient to fund the handout scheme for up to six months, actual disbursement of the fund might not last that long, depending on the COVID-19 situation.

The first batch of applicants has already received the money via their bank accounts. They are mostly small retailers, small food shops and manual workers.

What a joke, what a shutshow. Why are they warning people not to defraud the government? What's rattling around in their minds? because it doesn't seem to be brains.

Ye Gods and little fishes.

How about paying out to people who have been forced to close their business when there is not even a virus problem in Thailand.

Sounds as bad as the rice scheme by another government.

Shameful scam.

Why would that surprise you? Or did you think that the Yellows and the Reds are different kinds of people? They're all Thais together.

Indeed. Congrats for having reasoning power, there's lots in here that don't.

Sometimes it seems like a perennial fistfight between the reds and the Shin-haters. Like bunches of kids after school sometimes.

Are these people serious? They take away peoples' income by forced business closures, leaving them dead in the water, then dangle a very small carrot in front of them (5,000 Baht), then decide that only 5% of them actually "qualify" for the money and then have the gall to threaten those very same people with legal action! These people are sick, sadistic monsters.

Yes, they just know Thailand & Thais better than you.

Does somebody know what the requirements where for this scheme?

My brother-in law, sister in law, wife's Nephew all legitimately lost their job (tourist industry) due to Covid19 and all have applied for this. However all were denied the 5k baht...

Does anyone know?

absolute nonsense, the uk government is paying 80% of furloughed staff salaries up to a maximum of 2500GBP per month, those affected are happy with this arrangement, as are businesses.

If your correct and they are content, that is 68 million out of 8 million people on this planet... hardly a refutation of my assertion.

It is almost like they are trying to destabilize their own government... There has got to be more than 1.68 million in need, and everyone in need that has been rejected while others get the money will be rightfully angry and that type of anger can grow and explode.  It is very stupid politically at the very least.
