Makro gets fruity to help Thai farmers

The Siam Makro cash-and carry chain has boosted its purchases of domestic agricultural products in a bid to reduce the impact of Covid-19 on Thai farmers.

The chain is also running a promotional campaign urging customers to buy Thai agricultural products, said Siriporn Det Sing, Makro’s deputy CEO of corporate communication.

Siriporn explained that 30 per cent of Thailand’s agricultural products were consumed domestically, while 70 per cent were exported. But the global impact of the Covid-19 crisis is hitting export demand.

“Makro plans to increase its volume of agricultural products purchased by 40 per cent compared to last year,” she said.

“The corporation aims to distribute the products to Makro branches nationwide, and promote the consumption of seasonal Thai fruits throughout the year. This should help reduce farmers’ suffering” she added.

Between April and June, the corporation has organised an eastern Thai fruits festival in its shops and online.

How do you know you're buying Thai products ? There are no country of origin labels .Makro is full of Chinese fresh ? products.

Go easy on that word 'fresh'.  Bit like the grapes frOm Peru.  If they came on a boat there goes 2 weeks for a start!

I will buy more fruit in the MAkro if i don't have to be in a long queue to get it priced...they should learn to price products automatically so we don't have to wait long for it.

Agreed, wait for fruit to be scaled then wait for meat to be scaled then  wait  for, at this time you want to be in and out

makro need to learn about health and safety “ visited the local store recently as love my steak - majority of the steaks were full of blood and water / cannot refreeze the meat - Contamination !
-

asked the staff why selling frozen meat in a fresh counter and they looked at me as though i had 2 heads ..... anybody’s who’s worked with food know you cannot mix fresh and frozen meats together unless you want to be ill ... that said the fruit & veg selection was loverly and fresh and i would like to see more Thai produce being offered up instead of these dodgy imports.

Then wait for all the pallets they just parked in the alleys, wait for customers who park their trolleys in the walkway, wait in a ultra long queue to pay your purchases, wait for the guys at the door to check your bill, wait to get back on the main road....

Makro always was a great shop but since it is from CP it has become a huge unmanaged mess.

Steak i blood and water   sometimes companies add water spray before freezng to bump up the grams

not sure that beef is defrosted first before they sell it but then u are better off buying frozen put in freeze bag and take home put back in freezer then use when required

not see much fresh steak here what i see is beef cut offs in markets good fror stue but not prime steak \\

as for contamination   meat already is so cook well and not eat rare steak here u are asking for the

My greatest risk of Corona at the moment is supermarket shopping.

On the subject of fruit, if the price is right I'll buy it. I usually go to markets but they are a no go zone now

Makro is appalling.

Everytime I buy something fairly expensive like celery or leeks or big jaffa like oranges, it has all gone off or soft after two days at home in the fridge.

Some of the frozen products are equally disgusting, like the fish sticks that pretend to be fish fingers.

I wouldn't say Makro is appalling, not much different to Tesco and BigC and cheaper.

But those fish sticks ...... yes they ARE appalling.

All their frozen fish are, they are covered in a thick layer of ice, i bet it's sprayed on it. Their fish fillets are 50% or more water. I've tried them all.

I am thinking a lot of you who do shop at Makro would, like me, shop elsewhere if there was a decent alternative.   Even an Aldi would be good for consumers but when those in the ivory towers are pulling the strings the government will continue to sit on it's hands re: retail competition.

You are absolutely correct, wake up Macro do like they do in other countries. People themselves weigh it and press the bottom for whatever it is, and the price come out.

No need for a queue.

Makro doesn't even price goods in a 1 kg bag like onions...you have to go in the super long queue for that...or avocado's, the girl behind the price printer has to search in a map for some code to write down on the sticker by hand and stick it on the avocado...the customer still doesn't know the price though and the receipt also isn't in english anymore.

Terrible to see how thailand goes back in time. Makro is a big mess these days.
