A foreign man who sought an investor in a deal to buy steel was supposed to return 10 million baht he had previously changed into Euros.

But after the deal fell through he gave back just over half claiming the exchange rate was terrible.

At the weekend the Crime Suppression Division arrested Indonesian national Ricky H.W., 72, in the parking lot of a building on the Ratchada - Ramintra Road in Kannayao district of Bangkok.

He was named in a warrant issued by the Don Muang court for embezzlement.

Ricky found an investor in his scheme to buy Malaysian steel. The investor gave him 10 million baht to get Euros and then the pair went to Malaysia to complete the deal.

But the steel had already been sold meaning that the pair returned to Thailand with the money in Euros.

The investor waited for his 10 million baht back. Ricky was doing the exchange.

He was sent 5,012,500 by Ricky who said that was all he could get, the exchange rate was terrible.

The investor suspected foul play and the pair finally agreed that Ricky would transfer 4,200,000 more and they would let bygones be bygones.

The agreed date for the return of the money was last December.

When that date passed and all contact with Ricky ceased, the investor went to the police.

Which sum, of course, they declared to Customs and Excise during entry......
