Police and local officials were trying to come to terms with a tragedy after an assistant phu yai ban (village chief) gunned down his boss at a Covid-19 checkpoint in the area of north Ao Leuk, Krabi on Wednesday night.

Wichan Unkaew, 48, was shot once in the chest and three times in the groin. The assailant was Sornram Khreuabaen, 38, who left a 9mm gun on the table and gave himself up to Ao Luek police.

He will appear in court today on a murder charge.

Forensics were at the scene yesterday checking on bloodstains and seven cartridges found.

Sornram said he was stressed out after twenty consecutive days on duty at the checkpoint. He complained that he didn't have time for his air-con cleaning and satellite dish installation business.

A 54 year old man called Jamnuan who was there along with half a dozen others said that the phu yai ban and his assistant argued and Sornram pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the chest.

People tried to wrestle the gun from the shooter but further shots hit the groin of the victim who was taken to hospital but later died.

At a wake being held nearby reporters spoke to the wife of the victim. Julaporn said that both her husband and his assistant were lifelong best friends who had not argued over anything in the past.

She was grief stricken and at a loss to explain why it happened.

They don't think it's wrong to take extreme measures against another Human Being when they are stressed to breaking point.   This comes from leading their whole life being constrained and 'polite' to other people supposedly higher up the social ladder; they cannot have meaningful discussions with an Elder or anyone 'above' them and release whatever strain they may be under.

This country has a Mountain of Social problems that will take Century's to overcome.

Very much a hierarchical society.

I'm scared that this will start the rumor that after a while Covid 19 is turning the infected ones into killing zombies 🥶
