If they broke the rules in France do they think the police would treat them differently?

Yes, I think they would not have taken the "criminal" to the Police station and then ask a friend to extort 50k baht out of him.

The sign next to them clearly states 1 year imprisonment or fine not exceeding 100,000 baht or both , so if he paid 50.000 its only half of what he could of had to pay .

That was bail,..he now has to go to court,

paid 50,000 Baht bail, but don't get it back....I thought that only happened

if you jump bail.then want 2000 Baht to escort them home, makes you wonder

who are the real criminals.

Only the judge decides the fine, are the courts open on a day to day basis?

Wow!  This will do wonders for the Thai tourism plans, once this gets out in the International press: -

80 year old - forced to cough up 50K bail Non-returnable - no receipt!

Thais - 500Baht - returnable?

Extra money to take elderly guy home.

Smacks of rampant corruption and unnecessary intimidation of a very old foreigner, despite him doing something wrong.

What will be done about this?

Nothing, probably.

Until the numbers of returning foreigners doesn't materialise!

And even then - nothing!

Please remind me of the new Thai slogan - excitedly launched today?

On very good authority, it seems they were taken to court and paid 100k fine and retrieved passport from Police station. They had multiple warnings over a few days but kept returning once police left.

Moral of the story....

When you're told to stay away from the beach.... STAY AWAY FROM THE BEACH!!!!

No intention to insult or ridicule, If they tell you jump in the moat, will you? When will this tyranny end? Have you done any checking and research lately? So many medical professionals, scientists and other experts came out already with technical, sensible information about how spun out of control all the government imposed measures where and are. It is time to look a little closer to what is really going on instead of following the mainstream media/government narrative blindly.

The reporting is not very informative.

What law was broken?

What was the actual charge?

Did the police demand the bail money?

Why was only one person required to pay bail?

Why was there no receipt?

This sounds like something that would occur in a communist country like China.

Why were no pictures allowed? A cover-up? Was the wife or wives with the men?

Too many questions and this should go viral if true.

I'm not stupid or blind and don't need to do any research...
If a law is enacted by a country in which I am a guest I have learnt from many years of experience it's best to abide by it.
If the law is right or wrong is of no consequence... it is the law.

No offence intended.

I have to agree with you that being in a country as a guest on visa, you need to follow the laws.

What I am seeing these days is just stupidity and corruption from the government. Guess I will just

sit back and drink my now legal alcohol and laugh.

Question is who did he pay to, and why, apparently, the others were not "non-refundable bail fined".
When I paid bail for a friend, I got a receipt and received the money back on court date, when she appeared and the case was dismissed.
Have to mention in that context that a Volunteer Policeman was very helpful getting the bail paid, even though it was after closing time.

You got to remember like some say you are a guest whatever the rule or law it only applies to us who skin aren't the same color living here if one doesn't know how racist Thais and other Asian country are then this should be a good example if you take a chance and put yourself in a position for something to happen as a guest the price is going to be must different or less say higher.

The BIB for the last two months had the majority of their tea money cut, now they actually got to get out of the A/C office and police box and do some actual work like walk the bench and man checkpoint when an opportunity arises a bunch of farangs regardless of age that is pure $$$ signs he got off cheap maybe senior discount?????

You know, here is the thing, in most of the world, this same thing happens.

If you come from a country were it doesn't or does not happen often,

well good. You can be a little shocked.

You are at best a visitor here, understand what that means.

Here, as in most of the world, you want to have as few encounters

with police as is possible.

You will want to have as few encounters with government as is possible.

Learn what is allowed, what is tolerated, and how to avoid becoming

a target for police.

To do these things it is advisable to treat Thai people with at least

minimal respect and try and make a few Thai friends who can help

in this endeavor to avoid police and government.

You are ignorant, as a visitor, to tease the cops as to how far you can push a

situation.

I understand you think the baht you spend here is what keeps

the government going and therefore you deserve something, you don't.

You are also ignorant if you Thailand will change to fit your notions, they won't.

So base your stay here on those 2 facts and decide if it is worth it.

For me, at this time, it is worth the effort to follow laws

and customs the best I can.

Yes, everything is true that you say. This is been bothering me for a long time now and ready to leave.

The whole point, is to not let these franchisee creeps scare or intimidate you. I hold my ground with them, push back quite hard, and it genuinely surprises them. I have never in over a decade gotten a strong or hostile reaction from them. Just surprise. Sometimes astonishment. Sometimes they laugh. Most know that we know they are simply franchisees, and NOT law enforcement. Treat them as such. Treat them with the contempt they deserve. I am not nasty with them. I just do not show them much regard or respect. Certainly never any fear. You will be quite surprised, at how often they back down. Most are looking for an easy mark, and expect that with the average foreigner. I have actually found that they tend to defer to us, and I do and say things the average Thai would never dare to do or say. And of course, I would never consider behaving like that with a policeman in the US. I would probably get shot or arrested. Sorry, but I have little tolerance for their games here.

Another copy & paste Mike. Seen it.

A very dangerous attitude in my opinion. The only question you should ask a foreign copper is 'how high?'

I intend to give it about 2 more years if my health holds out then take a slow boat

back to the USA. If I was younger I might look at other places in Asia, but I am not.

If they tell you not to jump in the moat because it might have crocodiles in, would you jump in because they were being tyrannical?
