Rise in curfew violations since Sunday amid warning booze ban could be reinstated

Statistics showed that more people broke curfew and were caught illegally congregating after the sale of alcohol ban was lifted in most provinces, said Thai media.

 

On the night of Sunday to Monday 666 people were prosecuted who broke curfew and 129 people were arrested for illegally congregating.

 

The top three provinces for breaking curfew cases were Bangkok with 70, Pathum Thani 64 and Phuket 53, reported INN.

Many provinces reported no cases including Nong Khai, Chachoengsao, Mae Hong Son and Kalasin.

 

The top reasons given for breaking curfew were "out on business" and "going home".

 

Out of the people illegally congregating 60% were caught drinking alcohol, 21% were gambling and 11% were doing drugs.

 

Miscreants face 2 years in prison and/or fines of 40,000 baht.

 

Thailand's alcohol sales ban was lifted Sunday with only the governors of Pathum Thani, Buriram, Nakhon Phanom, Petchaburi and Phitsanulok keeping it in place until the end of May.

 

Thaivisa notes that the stats may fuel fears among Thailand's drinkers that bans will be reintroduced because some people are flouting the law.

 

On Monday, Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) spokesperson Taweesilp Visanuyothin, warned that the alcohol ban along with other recently eased restrictions could be reinstated if there is another rise in infections, Daily News reported. 

 

Curfew remains in place in the kingdom from 10 pm to 4 am daily.

Yep. I have a Thai m o r o n fat head neighbor other side of the wall but different housing estate who does it everyday thinking he is cute an untouchable as he has a house end of the street. Love to call the cops on him/them but we are here for the long run and don't need trouble.

Reinstate the alcohol ban  because some broke the curfew law ?... these people will always break the curfew laws  no matter how long the alcohol ban is...

I wish somebody would explain to me the logic behind the curfew in terms of COVID-19, what purpose does the curfew achieve in useful COVID control, other than reducing the opening hours of businesses that are normally open for 24 hours and therefore making these shops etc. busier during the shortened opening hours.

The only advantage I see it is that it possibly helps to reduce the criminal element.

Sunday saw masses of people rushing to buy alcohol, a minute percentage of those would have been alcoholics, the overwhelming majority did this purely because they do not trust the government to allow sales to continue and wanted to stock up, had there been no ban in the first place, then that situation would not have arisen. All this BS that no alcohol stops socialising, the locals continue to do this with or without booze, all they need is food and that will not stop regardless of what laws are put in place.

I expect many more problems because of alcohol than just breaking the curfew. But perhaps the people just get a warning and no penalty and so nobody cares about laws too much.

I think you are on the right track, yes the Thai's and Farang do gather for food and a chat as socializing,  however I believe it's to curb gatherings and boozing up together which then see's social distancing go out the window. I know that when the neighbours come over for a feed then some distancing is relaxed. however I think the reason behind no drinking in restaurants etc ... is that after drinking several bottles folks will forget about the social distancing and infection transmission could increase.  imo

Well after waiting 10 minutes in Big C the other day to purchase the last two bottles of Vodka which I believe will last me two months, I am now going to Lotus to buy another 2.

 

The eggs, masks and sanitizer shortages were one thing which didn't really affect us, but no alcohol, surely this will happen again, because of it's all about me, myself and I syndrome, typically Thai males IMO ????

 

Better stock up people, i.e. if you haven't already because as my dad used to sing when I was a kid, sipping on his glass of Ouzo, "she'll be coming round the mountain when she comes", also playing his harmonica to the same tune. Talented man my dad, when he was pi$$ed.

The logic might be that the authorities can't control everything 24 hours. And if the people stay at home there should be less problems.

1. The authorities here cannot control anything, this has been proven time and time again, the more they restrict, the more some people resist.

2. Reducing hours people are allowed out increases risks, this is simple mathematics.

3. If people are supposed to stay home, then what is the point of a curfew, you either stay home or you don't, the time of day or night matters not one iota. A curfew does not and cannot reduce the infection risk.

 

I had to go to a pet shop yesterday to purchase pet food, including the 3 staff and myself there were 7 persons in the shop and only one was wearing a mask correctly, myself, the rest were either on the chin or not covering their nose, again, no point behind it all, it is either worn properly or not at all, there is no halfway.

The drive to and from I saw one other person wearing a mask correctly.

The police force, and indeed most state agencies here are primarily tasked with controlling rather than serving the population.

 

The imposition and enforcement of a curfew is an effective and salutary reminder that "the uniforms" remain in charge.

Whatever the logic, curfew and alcohol bans were introduced to limit the risk of being infected until Covid 19 had passed us by. Clearly, from the above reported consequence, lifting bans without enforced sanctions will result in higher infection rates because these 'couldn't care less' offenders will spread it...

 

As for the alcohol rush - words fail me that people could be so addicted. Sad, really.

What troubles me is why punish all for the sake of the guilty, this is dragging Thailand back to the "Dark Ages"; it is the guilty people who should be punished then you would not upset the whole nation by a thoughtless decision.!!!!!!!
